Written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby is a book about love, greed, and betrayal. It is written in the perspective of the main character, Nick Carraway. Nick moved to West Egg, one of the poorer places in Long Island, from out west to pursue his dreams of working as a bond salesman around 1922. He has a mysterious neighbor, who goes by the name Jay Gatsby. He throws legendary parties that nearly everyone in New York attends. Nick's friends, Tom and Daisy Buchanan, live in the richer, more prosperous East Egg. Gatsby reveals that he is in love with Daisy and that they had planned to get married, but didn't because of financial struggles. Gatsby and Daisy get back together and do not make an attempt to hide their affair in any way. Tom immediately catches on and asks Daisy, Gatsby, and Nick to have a drink together in his apartment in New York. While there, Tom went to visit Myrtle, but when he arrived Wilson, Myrtle's husband, announces that he found out about his wife cheating on him. He doesn't know that it was Tom, but he says that they will be moving out west so she can no longer visit him. This means that Tom lost both his wife, and his mistress. He returns to the apartment and starts raving about how Gatsby isn't the man he claims to be, and Daisy finds out that he only made his money through bootlegging. Daisy decides that she no longer wants to leave Tom for Gatsby and asks to be taken home. Tom suggests that her and Gatsby take his yellow car back to the house, and him and Nick will follow. Daisy and Gatsby take off in a rush, and when they drive past Myrtle and Wilson's home, Myrtle recognizes that it's Tom's car and runs out in the middle of the road, and unfortunately gets …show more content…

The characters within the story and even the average reader become convinced that Daisy should flee the scene. Indeed Nick describes Daisy’s situation at the end of the first chapter as “It seemed to me that the thing for Daisy to do was to rush out of the house, child in arms ...” (Fitzgerald 23). From Tom’s racism on page 16, to his mistress calling during dinner on page 17, both the reader and characters have plenty of reason to dislike Tom, but Daisy remains with him regardless. Unfortunately for Tom, this mistreatment of Daisy eventually sets the scene for Gatsby’s return into Daisy’s life.…

Britons believed that wealth, religion, and freedom went hand in hand and I agree with this statement. As one of the prominent characters in the novel, Nick Carraway is the voice of ethical and moral behavior. His honest, forthright behavior serves to amplify out the reckless, decadent lifestyles of the wealthy (Jordan Baker, Tom and Daisy Buchanan); the major exception to this is Jay Gatsby. Nick is able to understand Gatsby's motives for living the life he has chosen: Gatsby has involved himself in racketeering so that he might be financially able to enter Daisy's world. While Nick understands this about Gatsby, it does not necessarily make Gatsby better than them.…

Nick Carraway seems unimportant from many aspects: he is not crucial to the plot of the story, he does not always “fit in” with the rest of the characters, and his purpose seems to be almost solely narration. However, after seeing the character of Nick portrayed in three separate ways, it has become clear that his characterization is extremely important to the overall meaning of the story. Altogether, Baz Luhrmann’s version of Nick is more accurate to Fitzgerald’s original intentions because, although not entirely involved in every event, he is emotionally involved in all aspects of the story and his view of the upper class becomes increasingly critical. The introduction of Nick in the first few minutes of each movie sets the tone for how…
