Nick Levil, Valerie's boyfriend, was quite the person. He enjoyed reading Shakespeare, specifically Shakespeare's Hamlet, originally given to him because of his love for reading. Given to him as a joke, he then began to enjoy Shakespeare, continuing from Hamlet to Macbeth and Othello. Nick, in his own words, said," I started to like it, you know? Like putting together a puzzle or something" (139). Nick and Valerie often discussed death, not just of themselves, but occasionally the death of others. After the creation of the Hate List, the notebook of ideas, concepts, and people both Nick and Valerie hated.
