This played a huge role in him pursuing his career as an author and poet. Soon after he married his wife Catherine and his mother unexpectedly passed away in 1989 from a horseback riding accident, the two moved to Sacramento, California, where Sparks continued to write, but his career had not taken off yet. He continued to have to persevere through hardships after his father passed away just six years later at the age of 54 in an automobile accident and he had yet to reach his goal of becoming published after writing two more hopeful novels. ("Home.") Because of this, he had to settle for a job in the manufacturing business which wasn't a very glorious job by any means. Although he was now married and had a job that put food on the table, he continued his passion of writing novels and was determined to become published. Sparks worked through a variety of jobs including, real estate appraisal, food services, dental supply sales, and home restoration while trying to write and sell his first novel. In 1994 this hard work and determination finally began to pay off. He and a friend decided to co write a book called “Wokini: A Lakota Journey to Happiness and Self Understanding.” (Creative, The Uprising. "Nicholas Sparks.") This book was published by Feather Publishing, Hay House, and Random House, selling 50,000 copies in its first year.
