In Harper Lee 's classic book To KIll a Mockingbird the main character, Scout, is told by her father Atticus that most people are nice "when you finally see them". This concept that Atticus presents couldn 't be more true. Throughout the book and real life experiences, people like Boo Radley, Tom Robinison, and Dolphus Raymond are able to see and have the niceness seen in them. Atticus is a good example of a person who always tries to see the good in people and he is more or less an idealist. Well, Atticus and I are riding in the same boat. I believe, as well, that most people are good when you finally seem them. The most obvious display of a person is nice, but most people don 't see him for that is Boo Radley. However, to the people who actually knew him and those that could see past his skin color he was a good man, father, and worker. Tom Robinson would continuously pass by the Ewell 's property to get to work. Bob Ewell 's eldest daughter, Maywell, would always ask for a hand doing small little tasks around the property. You would think that after doing this for quite sometime Tom, a father of 3 children, would receive some type of payment. Because after all Tom had a family whom he 'd probably rather be with. When asked if he was ever payed for his work in court, he replied "No suh, not after she offered me a nickel the first time. I was glad to do it, Mr. Ewell didn 't seem to help her none, and neither did the chillun, and I knowed she didn 't have no nickels to spare"(256). This shows that Tom Robinson was a good person. He was willing to take time out of his day just to help someone. The fault was not in him, but in the people who couldn 't see past the color of his skin and if they took the time to know him like other people did they could see the truly nice person that he

Finally, the time period of the story is in the middle of the whites segregation and hatred against blacks, which is why the Ewells side of the story would overpower Tom’s side. In the story, Reverend Sykes says “I ain’t ever seen any jury decide in favor of a colored man over a white man”(Lee 279). Considering the time period and how people think about blacks might be enough to be in the favor of the Ewells. Next, the Jury could lean in the favor of Tom Robinson. First off, Tom has nothing to hide in his testimony.…

Tom Robinson, a character in To Kill A Mockingbird, is incessantly looked down upon due to his skin color, a factor that he has no control over. The story depicts Tom being accused of a crime that he didn’t commit. Tom haplessly had the disadvantage of being a colored man. “‘In our courts, when it's a white man's word against a black man's, the white man always wins.’”…

It was Miss Stephanie’s pleasure to tell us: this morning, Mr. Bob Ewell stopped Atticus on the post office corner, spat in his face, and told him he’d get him if it took the rest of this life” (PDF 73). In this passage, Miss Maudie explained that though Atticus did not have to take the case and though he ends up receiving backlash from Bob Ewell, he did it out of loyalty to his moral standards and to Tom. Subsequently, however, the man whom Atticus was defending, Tom, proves how loyal he could be to the point of death. Tom Robinson, while he was African American and discouraged to interact with Mayella Ewell, continued to help her and assist her out of pity and loyalty for his morals, though it would eventually get him killed. Tom remained loyal to what he thought was right, even if it was heavily frowned upon in society at the time.…

To Kill A Mockingbird written by Harper Lee is written to address the horrendous issues of the 1930’s, The Great Depression, the Jim Crow Laws, and segregation. It explores a variety of themes, all of which affect the reader greatly. Its portrayal of white supremacy, injustice, and prejudice is evident in many occurrences during the novel. The way the characters react to these times of hardship, however, defines their real strength stated by Martin Luther King Jr with the quote “the ultimate measure is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy”. These significant themes, white supremacy, injustice, and prejudice, are reflected through the characters Scout Finch, Atticus…

Another example of Atticus’ compassion is his reaction to Walter Cunningham’s presence in the mob that tries to lynch Tom Robinson. After Scout and Jem decry Mr. Cunningham for his participation in the racially charged attempted lynching, Atticus replies, “Mr. Cunningham’s basically a good man… he just has his blind spots like the rest of us.” (Lee 165) Atticus does not believe that Mr. Cunningham’s racial beliefs make him an evil or immoral man. Instead, he recognizes that human morality is complex and that one’s surroundings and upbringing can stifle or misguide one’s moral convictions.…
