As an Italian diplomat, Machiavelli's views of leadership such as it being "much safer to be feared than loved"(79) seems contrary to the way many Americans view leaders, since many of his views go against what people see in a leader. Born in Florence, Italy, Niccolò Machiavelli was jailed whenever the Medici family acquired power in 1512("Niccolò..."). During this time, he wrote one of most famous works, The Prince, teaching his views of how to acquire and maintain their kingdom. Many of Machiavelli philosophies on how to lead may sound cold-hearted and cruel, but much of it is used by influential leaders, who have shaped our views of successful leadership skills. If we look closely, American president, Grant, and dictator, Musharraf, have…

Modern states mirror the Roman republic in terms of states affairs, political process, and statecraft. Around the time Machiavelli was writing The Prince, the study on Roman politics was underdeveloped, as more attention was paid toward humanism. Much of the study of the Roman republics was devoted to the arts and literature and was second only to the Bible in popularity. Machiavelli set out to understand Roman political history and he was the first truly modern theorist of republicanism and grandfather of political realism. Machiavelli fantasized in many respects about the virtues of the ancients and did so to critique his own age, rather like Nietzsche would do over three hundred and fifty years later.…

Machiavelli and his ideas, while having provided the world with a foundation from which to build the concepts of political philosophy, have become largely irrelevant in modern society. Not only have they lost their benefit in today's day and age; but, they have also adopted negative consequences due to the way the world, and the political atmosphere, have evolved. The opinions which he put forth regarding neutrality, public opinion, and the presence of leaders within a nation have all served to benefit numerous leaders from the ancient times of the Greeks all the way up to The French Revolution when absolutist methods of rule were essentially eliminated from the western world. From that point on, Machiavelli’s ideas became counterintuitive,…

Machiavelli’s concept of virtue is centered around the glorification of a ruler, facilitated by behavioural traits such as bravery, cleverness, deceptiveness, and ruthlessness. Effective rule requires these attributes, as the successful application of these characteristics towards the acquisition and maintenance of power will allow one to become a powerful leader. Machiavelli first explains the foundations of various principalities, such as hereditary and mixed principalities, as the maintenance of power differs…
