Niccolò Machiavelli's 'The Prince'

Niccolò Machiavelli in “The Prince” mentions that “the end justifies the means”. At least once in everyone’s life, at one point they’ve made a dishonest decision. Some have even tried to explain their actions by bending the truth. It doesn’t matter how people reach what they want as long as the outcome is what they had hoped. The end goal doesn’t necessarily have to be good or noble. Though many people believe the end does not justify the means I believe it is acceptable to go to any extent to obtain something that is for a good cause.
Several individuals would argue that there are occasions were a lie must be told in order for it to be favorable. According to Machiavelli “[one] should be as strong as a lion, and as shrewd as a fox, and may

The North went to war with the South in order to officially end slavery one in for all. Both the North and the South were engaged in a fierce violent battle. The North was fighting to end slavery and the South was fighting to keep slavery. Thousands and thousands of soldiers were killed during that period. At the end of this war, President Lincoln ended slavery in all Southern states. Although many soldiers were killed during that period it was for a good cause. I believe the end indeed justifies the means.
Another example would be a family in need of shelter. Suppose a family is lost and is freezing cold and exhausted. The family is dying of thirst and hunger. They spot a home and break into the home for shelter. They utilize whatever is inside of that home. Some individuals may view this as incorrect and illegal, but the family was in urgent need and did something that was for a good cause which therefore makes it justifiable. They did not break into the home to steal or with a malicious intent they did it because there was not another choice. The family did what it had to do in order to get what they wanted

Let’s suppose the officer is making a traffic stop and the person in the vehicle has a weapon, but the officer has no idea. The officer approaches the vehicle and views the gun so he draws his weapon and fires. The police officer kills the man in the vehicle. The actions of the police officer are therefore justified by pointing out the positive outcome. The officer saw the gun and had to shoot the man to protect himself. Now an officer not being charged for killing someone is something serious and can result in total chaos. Some officers can abuse of this which can be a difficulty that can arise when unworthy means are used to achieve worthy ends. According to Machiavelli “so long as a [Prince] keeps his subjects united and loyal, ought not to mind the reproach of cruelty; because with a few examples he will be more merciful than those who, through too much mercy, allow disorders to arise” (Machiavelli 409).
For these reasons, I believe the end does indeed justify the means. Though many people believe the end does not justify the means I believe it is acceptable to go to any extent to obtain something that is for a good cause. Any way of achieving the end goal is acceptable. The bombing of Japan killed thousands of citizens, but it brought an end to WWII and saved thousands of lives that were in danger. The National Security Agency spies and gathers information from citizens, but serves as a way of

In Machiavelli’s The Prince, Machiavelli gives an instructional guide on how to gain and keep political power. In Machiavelli’s writing “How a Prince Should Keep His Word”, Machiavelli states that the princes that have kept their word are the ones that do the little and care the less about keeping their promises. Machiavelli then proclaims two means of fighting. A prince may then fight with force or through the animals. A man also must know the nature of fighting between an animal and another man. This action commenced through the ancient writers illogically.…

The King Hamlet is murdered by his own brother Claudius who then immediately married the sister-in-law Gertrude and reigns on till Hamlet the prince avenged the death of his father by killing Claudius and dying in the process..finally we have the advent of Fortinbras who march in a Denmark open, free and presented to him. Hence looking at it this way we have a general and evolving array of events in the history of Denmark, just like one of the examples cited in Machiavelli's prince. We thus take the three mentioned characters and evaluate them. Claudius is a complete villain, he murders his own brother by pouring poison in his ears, he ruled the kingdom strongly, he indulges in incessant merry making, then he plots the death of his nephew. Thus his action as we see in the play is completely calculated.…

Machiavelli in The Prince is primarily a practical observer and diplomat analyst prescribing numerous ethical and political instructions to Cesar Borgia for pyramidical maintenance, sustenance and enhancement of political power at various stages of capturing, nurturing, preserving and augmenting power and absolute power for the prince. Hobbes’s aim in his Leviathan is similar to that of Machiavelli’s The Prince. Both are equally concerned for bringing about order out of chaotic civil war like situation in England and arbitrary ruler in Italy respectively. Hobbes is making an all-out effort to create an edifice and basis of scientific foundation for the need of a sovereign power through his so called scientific materialism. That is why he discusses at length human nature, psyche and need for sociological order in society.…

Through their powerful renderings of war and politics, Niccolò Machiavelli's iconoclastic 1532 political treatise The Prince and Shakespeare's 1599 historical tragedy Julius Caesar mutually seek to explore the nature of human weakness. A manifestation of Machiavelli's radically realpolitik interpretation of Renaissance humanism, The Prince subverts the traditional Christian moral zeitgeist, redefining weakness in instrumental terms - that a leader's results are superior in importance to his means of achieving them. While influenced by the comparable circumstances of the inchoate European Renaissance, Julius Caesar explores in a more nuanced manner the notion that a ruler's weaknesses are not subject merely to instrumentalist justification,…

Growing up in such a tumultuous era allowed Niccolò Machiavelli to examine many cases of the rise and subsequent fall of short-lived governments as well as their causes, such as constantly changing alliances. These experiences led to a cynical view of human nature along with a clear understanding of the objectionable behavior necessary to retain power in politics. His career as a politician and diplomat cemented his very pragmatic stance on human nature and the nature of politics, both of which are described throughout The Prince. Unlike fellow philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle, who preferred to hypothesize based on ideals, Machiavelli held the contentious belief that a separation between politics and moral philosophy was the necessary…

At face value, The Prince and the Discourses seem to have a conflicting nature, but both texts focus on the administration of a state and present textual similarities. Much of what Machiavelli writes in The Prince reinforces the Discourses, echoing both stylistically and thematically. Machiavelli uses pragmatic methods in both and accentuates the importance of historical studies. In The Prince, there is a significant amount of reference to Cesare Borgia, a man that Machiavelli admires, and he states, “I shall never hesitate to cite Cesare Borgia and his actions,” and his views on virtue and fortune come out of Borgia’s narrative . For Machiavelli, Borgia is the superlative example of a man who can compel any individual to do the distasteful…

Since the time of Machiavelli, people have struggled to answer the question of whether the ends justify the means. To sum up in a definition, the saying “The end justifies the means” is used to say “that a desired result is so good or important that any method, even a morally bad one, may be used to achieve it” (Merriam-Webster) For centuries, people have quarrelled over this topic and debated whether the end result is worth the methods you used to get there. In the play Macbeth by Shakespeare, Macbeth, a lord under King Duncan, receives a prophecy from three witches saying that he will become king. Believing that it will be true, him and his wife plot to murder the king.…
