Nic Sheff’s struggle with an addiction to methamphetamines and other drugs started at the age of 18. After dropping out of college his freshman year, he went to rehab. After many years of relapsing and attending rehabilitation centers, Nic remains three months sober.
When trying to diagnose Nic, risk factors that could have contributed to his addiction need to be assessed. At the age of three, Nic experienced a traumatic event, the ending of his parents’ marriage and a split household. A traumatic environment is a risk factor for substance abuse and mental disorders. Nic also really strived to fit in with his friends in school so the social pressure of acceptance could have also contributed to the addiction. Nic could have had a biological predisposition to drug abuse. His father abused drugs for many years, which needs to be noted.
Nic no longer uses substances and is not currently involved in any sort of treatment. Nic resides in the maintenance stage because of his three-month sobriety. Nic should seek out a therapist that not only meets his needs for addiction but also the trauma that he experienced as a child. This type of therapy will ultimately help Nic stay sober for longer by working on his co-occurring issues.
