Nibbles: A Short Story

As children, my friends and I cherished exploring the world around us. One friend in particular, Joseph, was constantly getting himself into trouble. Many thought he was unintelligent, but he just had a knack for adventuring. One day, as we foolishly played in the backyard, Joseph suddenly tripped on a hole that was about the same size as a basketball. Being the curious person he was, Joseph decided to investigate the hole by reaching into it. Suddenly Joseph started screaming and jerked his hand out of the hole, flinging something across the yard in the process. Upon further inspection, Joseph and I realized that the object he had flung was a light-brown baby rabbit. The rabbit had bitten Joseph which was what had caused him to jerk his hand back. We only thought it appropriate to name him Nibbles. At first we thought Nibbles had been killed on impact. However, he was still alive and moving around slowly. It was not the greatest structure known to man, but we felt that it suited Nibbles quite perfectly. Extremely proud of our achievement, we showed the little building to Nibbles. To our dismay, he had no interest in the house at all. In an attempt to get Nibbles to go into the house, we tried to coax him with lettuce and carrots. When this did not work, we tried physically moving him with still the same luck. Feeling unappreciated, Joseph and I lost hope. We realized that Nibbles did not care about the house we had made him, but in fact was trying to get back to his original home. Though we were slightly upset, we knew that Nibbles was happy wherever he decided to stay. Without understanding it at the time, Joseph and I learned a valuable lesson. We learned that though you may work hard on something, others may not appreciate it. The energy expelled and the attempted act of kindness still left us with a feeling of
