I take a great deal of pride in guiding students to work together to improve themselves and their community. As the student body president of my school and the chairperson of my state’s student council, I push my fellow leaders forward through genuine trust, personal bonds and interpersonal harmonious relationships. It is my ultimate goal to leave others satisfied with their roles and the results that we achieved together by simply giving them a platform to share their voice. Focusing on critical aspects of humanism by using empathy, I encourage my students to take action. However, this does not make me the perfect leader—there’s no such thing. The best a leader can do is improve; I intend on improving by eventually becoming a lawyer with a …show more content…
Although my Free Application for Federal Student Aid may say otherwise, my family does not have a great deal of income. Coming from a family where my mother is a factory worker and my father has jobs in construction that come and go, I’ve never reached stable economic ground. In fact, my father’s been unemployed for months. Money comes and goes and in a flash, and it is best to take advantage of it whenever we can. I do not wish to leave the burden of paying for my future with parents when they have done so much for my past. Hence, why I’ve worked so hard my entire academic life. I want to achieve the best education that I can by investing and providing for myself towards a better future.
I am going to college because it is an institutional ground that is completely dedicated to self-innovation. We innovate by learning and listening from one another. We innovate with a sense of strong direction. We innovate by expanding our commitment towards leadership. I find satisfaction in taking the time to focus on a problem that affects others and solving it; and to build the scale at which I’ll be able to create solutions to such problems by becoming a lawyer all starts with an excellent

Argument Over the past 20 years, in-state tuition and fees at public National Universities, have increased a ridiculous 296 percent, according to U.S. News. This increase has made receiving a higher education extremely difficult for lower middle class and poorer families. Often if these families try to send their children to college, they either pile on debt or tell their child they’re on their own. Both of these situations can cause issues such as family tension, crippling financial situations, and often a situation that is very difficult to get out of.…

As a first generation undocumented college student there is great privilege and pride in attending the University of California, Santa Barbara. However with that there is also many obstacles and struggles that I have faced in order to survive and thrive in this institution, one of them is my need for financial aid. Coming from a low-income, single mother household I do not rely on my mother for financial support because I already know she struggles to feed my siblings and pay their bills. As a result I am sending my mother money on a monthly basis in order for her to complete rent for the month and afford groceries. Due to the fact that I am constantly sending my mother and household money in order to contribute to their survival, I have been working two part-time jobs while still being a full-time student in order to make my needs to be met as well.…

National Honor Society (NHS) is built upon four key values (scholarship, character, leadership, and service), and I think that I exemplify all four of these values, as I show them through my contribution to the club now and as I will show them through my future officer position of secretary; due to the fact that I exhibit these qualities, I will also be able to leave NHS better than I found when I leave the club in the future. NHS has offered lots of service opportunities since I have joined the club, and it offers a challenging experience for the top students in the sophomore through senior classes; fifty hours must be completed by the end of the year for returning members, and fifty hours must be completed by the next school year for new members. The club ultimately instilled in me important and very useful life qualities. The service activities that must be completed improve my work ethic and ability to work in groups with others, and they also help me get involved more with my community. As a future officer, I would be a great example for members because I have all the qualities needed to be a great NHS leader, allowing me to contribute to NHS as much as I can and to also mold future members to be like myself.…

Even though I applied for financial aid I was denied. I came to learn that the federal formula was weighted not only by income but also by assets. So my parent’s small nest egg, a modest home with sundry repairs to come and a mortgage to be paid every month for the next ten years, counted against me. I’d attend classes during the early morning hours, late afternoons, evenings and weekends as long as it didn’t interfere with my work hours. When breaks came around, while some of my friends were off on vacation or volunteering in faraway countries, I worked extra hours.…

In Student Affairs we can challenge students to think creatively, speak boldly, and lead fiercely in their college careers. Students attend college to gain knowledge and learn at a higher level of thinking, to me that means we must challenge them to adapt and learn more about themselves, the world they live in, and how they would like to fit into the world around them. This concept is greatly encouraged by the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, a framework that encourages students to learn about integrity, authenticity, inclusion, meaning making and collaboration (Komives, 2011). As Student Affairs professionals, we can provide students with leadership experience and challenge their developmental growth through leadership, teaching students that leadership is not only about holding a position but rather the behaviors of working towards shared goals and ideals (Komives,…

A common complaint amongst college-age individuals is that college is often not very affordable. Although basically all accredited colleges have some sort of financial aid program, it is often not inclusive enough to reach the population necessary. A lot of students with very little family income are given enough aid to afford school, but the average middle-class student is buried in crippling debt. This leads to the conclusion that the basic financial aid policy that most colleges abide to is inefficient, and will furthermore just lead to a greater income gap between the wealthy and financially stable, and those considered to be in poor financial standing. A way to combat this is to revise the policy, and consider those students that are in the middle, between the economic elite and financially insufficient.…

My leadership philosophy is one that is rooted in the strong belief that it must be a continuous quest to motivate all students to become critical thinkers, effective communicators, and lifelong learners, while possessing outstanding character.
