21 March 2015 Another NFL Murder Case
Introduction
I have been a football fan for most of my life and remember seeing numerous cases dealing with murder or illegal activity by players in the NFL. In fact, “There have been 47 arrests of NFL players since the end of the last regular season: bar brawls, cars wrecked, spouses shoved or beaten” (Solotaroff and Borges). Aaron Hernandez’s(sp) sentencing for first degree murder is the most recent NFL player news, and I have taken interest in examining the case and how it is presented to the public. The methods affect the overall message received by the reader, which plays a big role in finding how strong the claim represented in each article is. The different approaches used, one being a summary and a list of people associated in the case, and the other containing a summary backed up by background information, each make the reader view the coverage in different ways. Since the culture we live in focuses on the bad things that happen, the coverage tries to capture people’s attention with the murder, and then provides insight towards the motives of Hernandez. Also, the coverage companies do not want their customers to lose interest in the article, so subtopics and facts are used to create further interest for the reader. Along with the idea of keeping the reader’s interest media coverage tends to focus only on the facts and events that make Aaron Hernandez look guilty. In some instances there was reference to facts or events that would make Hernandez look less murderous, but they were very scarce throughout the articles. The articles did an excellent job in providing facts, evidence, and summaries of the case, but lacked any proposal of information against the guilty side. Although Hernandez was already sentenced, the articles still should have discussed the possibility that Hernandez was falsely charged with the murder. Each source gave a large amount of information, but did not always connect the information to the case. For example, the character bios of those involved in the murder, the character might have only been mentioned in his or her description paragraph and not connected further into the
