In “Football High” produced by Rachel Dretzin and Caitlin McNally aired on April 12, 2011, the dangers of high school football are explored. The 53:11 minute episode deals with the pressures on high school football today and how the game has become more and more physical over the past few years. This documentary focuses on high school football players but the medical impact has effects on all football players who are constantly putting themselves at risk with major hits repeatedly. High school boys love their sport, as do most people involved in the high school, and will do anything to continue playing. This weekend i had the pleasure of covering a Quarterback camp ran by Quarterback Architects ran by Carson Cutler and Tony Freeman. Coach Carson and Freeman held a free QB camp this past weekend in Chesapeake, Virginia for the middle school and high school kids. Quarterback Architects had some assistance from some past great Virginia QBs such as Corwin “Turtle” Cutler(D1 College Player) David Watford ( NFL Draft Prospect), and Phil Simms ( Seattle Seahawks). It was amazing to witness how much the kids advanced from just one camp. I saw kids that i questioned if they should be playing this position to them end up being the best passers out there.…

Poetry allows for writing to reveal transitional work and in this case the transitory connection between internal conflict and the will to grow. Louis Jenkins’s “Football” serves as a model for this effort. While the poem is about football and difficult choices, it disguises as the internal battles of the speaker as well. A notable take is how Jenkins guides the readers’ attention to the speaker and his confusing decisions he presents as a quarterback. We were all glad to have placed well, but were overall disappointed in losing first place by one measly point. Setting the mood for remembering our countless failures and long practices, the seniors went around the group, giving each member of the team their own little speech. When they got to me, every single senior noted how much I had changed over the season. Listening to them recount the season to me, it truly hit me how different I was compared to the beginning of the season. Senior speeches had opened a book of memories for me.…
