I have always wanted to enter the medical field so that I could help people, and I believe that is my calling on how I will make a difference in society. At whatever school I end up at, I plan to make a difference in that community as I have my own through my involvement within local philanthropies. In Prosper, I am part of National Charity League, a mother daughter philanthropic organization that gives back to our community. I volunteered regularly at ManeGait and Cornerstone two local charities located in the city of Prosper. I will connect with people who have the same drive and passion as I do, while still staying involved within my community. Another quality I exhibit is that I will never be outworked. Being at the top of my class since my freshman year, I know how to achieve and maintain a high ranking while under many pressures from my extracurriculars. I stay involved with my community while taking rigorous course materials. This time of year, I have a 0 period for my Practicum Emergency Medical Technician Class and a 9th period for my after school practices on a Varsity

Since my second semester at UT, I have devoted 15 hours a week to volunteering as a Young Life leader. Every week I help run a club meeting for dozens of high school kids, manage a planning meeting with my teammates, and lead a small group for sophomore girls. I spend hours at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School watching games and performances, and simply getting to know these young adults. Through investing this time to build relationships as a mentor and role model, I strove to show these girls that they are significant, noticed and valued. Volunteering as a Young Life leader has taught me invaluable lessons in building relationships, caring for others, and working with a team that will help me to be a more supportive and productive physician…

Ever since middle school, my parents have told me to participate in as many clubs and opportunities offered to me, but I never listened to them until high school. If you were on the board of a scholarship selection committee 20 years from now, would you award the 17-year-old you a scholarship? Why or why not? With non-subject-specific scholarships such as this, one of the most significant components of an application is the student’s exhibition of motivation and enthusiasm for their intended field of study. Attending a school that emphasizes diversity like the University of California, Los Angeles allowed me to interact with dissimilar people and immerse myself in many cultures different from my own. Through conversations outside of class and attending multiple culture nights, I was able to experience some of the customs, values, and beliefs of other cultures I had never been previously exposed to. However, most of my understanding has come from my service in Dr. Amy Waterman’s lab at the UCLA Transplant Research and Education Center. The research lab aims to reduce racial disparities in transplant. I feel that I can make a difference in each patient’s life that I encounter, it might be as small as getting a wheelchair if they seem flaccid or weak, a blanket if they are cold, something to drink or just talking to a patient to get their mind off pre-surgery. I look forward to volunteering each week. The most rewarding day by far was being able to witness a nurse giving CPR to a child choking. She saved his life. I would want to someday be able to be able to save a life, not for the recognition but because I want to make a difference.…
