Newt Observation Essay

Improved Essays
Newts are semi-aquatic amphibians with tails (Brockes 2005) that are of the family Salamandridea. All newts are salamanders, but not all salamanders are newts. I will be observing specifically California Newts (Taricha torosa) and Rough-Skinned Newts (Taricha granulosa), which are both commonly found in the Northern California Area. Each can also be found in the UC Botanical Garden’s Japanese Pool, which is where I will be observing them. The two species are very close genetically and are able to form hybrids, although it seems to be extremely rare in nature (Davis and Twitty 1964). Therefore, I will be observing and drawing conclusions from both species’ behaviors. Male and female newts typically behave similarly, with the main exceptions being in the mating process. Male newts tend to migrate towards breeding individually and female newts in groups. The influx of males to ponds is gradual and begins about a month before females start to enter (Pimentel 1960). This appears to be the only major difference between sexes as far as their time spent …show more content…
I intend to explore the mating benefit of the male tail, particularly with help from the works by Propper, Halliday, and Janzen (referenced below). These explore the behaviors before, during, and after mating while will hopefully allow me to compare the sexes’ actions and see how a tail may benefit a male. The works of Grayson, Dodd, and Pimentel describe more about the actions of males and females outside of mating, and perhaps how a flatter tail could help the male on land or in the water. Janzen, Brossman, Arntzen, and Gvodik all either discuss the tails themselves or experiment with the tails of newts and their significances. Halliday’s work also goes into depth of another Genus of newt that has very different mating rituals than Taricha, and I am hoping to get another perspective of how a tail could benefit one newt over

On 2/17/17 at approximately 2230 RA 224 Brittany Essen requested the assistant of DPS for a funny odder coming out of room 405. Upon arrival myself Officer Chad Stephenson (141) along with Cadet Josh Stankiewicz (156) and Cadet Michael Birt (120) we also noticed the odder coming from room 405. After confirming there was a smell RA Essen called CLA Lucia Rothaas (375) to assist with the room search, I then called Director Cindy Birdwell (309) to inform her that the RA’s were doing a room search and we we’re there to assist them, Director Birdwell said ok but if we find anything to freeze the scene and call her back to decide what are next move would be. After approximately 10 min I found what looked to be Marijuana in a desk drawer, I then…

The Strawberry Poison-Dart Frog (Dendrobates pumilio, as well as, Oophaga pumilio) are very small, slender, dioecious, bilateral symmetric ("Poison frogs", 2003; Sandmeier, 2001; Savage, 2002; Penner 2011, n.p.) creatures that normally reach 17-24 mm in length with four, digits on their hands and feet. These frogs have dark eyes and their skin is very dewy with a gleamy appearance (Penner 2011, n.p.) and tend to vary in colors –strawberry-red, yellow, white, green, orange all mostly with black or navy blue lower parts- which explains its common form called “blue jeans”. The color that Dendrobates pumilio (image 1) exhibit expresses that the frog has a toxicity that is very poisonous which is alerting to predators so that they will avoid attacks…

Physical Appearance: Tamandua Anteaters are much smaller than Giant Anteaters, but are by no means small. They typically weigh about 2-7 kg, their bodies (head to rump) are 470-770 mm long, and their tails are 402-672 mm long. They almost look like skunks because of their distinct black “V” that reaches from their trunk all the way to their rumps. This black “V” creates the illusion of the Tamanduas’ wearing a vest. The vest stops at their tail, which is naked and has unusual black marks.…

Sexual selection has long been recognized as a powerful evolutionary process having important consequences on reproductive behaviour, morphology, and fitness (Birkhead and Pizzari, 2002). Sexual selection research has often focused on pre-copulatory mate choice; however, the discovery of female promiscuity and polyandry has lead to the realization that mate choice continues to operate after copulation (Birkhead and Pizzari, 2002). For males, it is obvious that promiscuity has evolved to increase reproductive fitness; however, the potential benefits to females are less understood (Keller and Reeve 1995). Nevertheless, recent studies suggest that females may gain genetic benefits by mating multiply by increasing offspring genetic diversity or…

    Desert Iguana Summary

In this article, Mathew Baelor and C. O’Niel Krekorian studied the ability of the Desert Iguana (Dpisosaurus dorsalis) to detect chemical cues of predators via chemoreception. In their experiment, they used the California Kingsnake, which preys on lizards in the wild; therefore, making it an optimal predator stimulus. On the contrary, the researchers used the western shovel-nosed snake, a sympatric species to the California kingsnake, to test the general response of the iguana’s snake chemcials. Unlike the California kingsnake, the western shovel-nosed snake does not feed on lizards and only feeds on arthropods making it an optimal snake control stimulus. (Bealor and Krekorian, 2002).…

After reading about this research I had wondered if female’s preference can lead to an evolution of a species over a long period of time. This is based upon that if a female were to prefer one trait over another one, and after a while a species that trait would evolve this specific trait. This question was also one of Robinson, Tudor and Morris, who wanted to explore the other half of a hypothesis from Fisher & Rosenthal who suggested that female swordfish preferred dorsal fins of smaller size, since males with larger dorsal fins tend to have more aggressive behaviors than other. Robinson, Tudor, and Morris had hypothesized that if Fisher & Rosenthal’s statement was true that the female swordfish would prefer the average swordfish dorsal fin to that of the larger sized fin. They also explored in depth how the dorsal fin had a correlation to the courtship of this species by predicted that males would raise their dorsal fins around females more than if they were alone, and that the amount of times that the dorsal fin was raised would lead to a higher amount of mating behaviors.…

    Courtship In Animal Bird

Life sustains itself by means of reproduction. An innate sense to pass on one’s genes to the next generation of their species is present in all living organisms. In the animal kingdom courtship is used to find a suitable mate with ideal characteristics that they want their offspring to have. In this essay birds have been chosen to be discussed due to their unique and complex courtship rituals. Ironically, even though humans are one of the largest populations of beings on Earth we tend to use courtship with occasionally convoluted mannerisms simply for sexual pleasure.…
