News stations are under fire a lot for being biased. One will often hear the President of the United States, Donald Trump, make claims about how there is “fake news”. But is there some truth to that, or is it all “fake news”? It’s almost ironic. Either normal news has “fake news”, or the people that are saying there is “fake news” are fake. As the people of this country, the citizens should have an unbiased news education. Having the U.S. Government enact laws to reduce the amount of politically biased news sources, on all sides of the political spectrum, would in turn provide politically neutral education to its citizens. Fake news, from Americans’ point of view, is real. “Meanwhile, 66% currently agree that most news media do not do a good job of letting people know what …show more content…
“...many journalists actively seek to avoid implicit displays of partisanship or non-objectivity in their work” (Quackenbush 6). Many people that blame the news for providing false information also carry that to the reporters. They will say that this reporter is alt-left or alt-right because of the network they are on. “Reporters were now being labeled as left or right depending on where they worked and star anchors defined the network” (Boudreau 5:00-5:10). While the statement that journalists try to avoid being biased may be true, the reporters are not the ones in question of truthfulness. The sources themselves are what is telling the reporters to say. Most news stations have their reporters read off of a script. So the journalists do not have as much control of the content of which they are speaking. If they go too far off script, they could very well be fired because of it. “The media was becoming the enemy. And evolving technology was the game-changer” (Boudreau

As William Shakespeare once said, “No legacy is so rich as honesty,”. Thankfully, journalistic media today has adopted this Shakespearean conduct as their own when they deliver news. Gladstone acknowledges this when she claims, “Journalism has entered a new era of openness,”(Gladstone 47). Being open with their stories has created a mutual trust between the journalists and their listeners that the information being received is true. For example, “The Influencing Machine” describes an instance of this, “When Walter Cronkite ends his CBS newscast with… facts, unseasoned and served deadpan,”(Gladstone 103).…

Regardless of the news station, television show, magazine, or person, anything that is expressed through human values will have bias. Principles such as politics, sports, and even certain parking spots can have bias opinions. Opinions, whether one likes them or not, are always worthwhile; however, once those opinions take away freedoms of others, they become irrelevant. Whether the opinion is coming from CNN, Sports Illustrated, or Duck Dynasty, that single opinion could sway someone from one side to another. Regardless the source of the opinion, it is every democratic citizen’s right to state his or her belief; however, there is a fine line between opinions and taking away freedom.…

Before the internet, there was not the variety of news sources that there are now. There were radio stations, conventional newspapers, and the three main television networks. The lack of widespread coverage created a competitive atmosphere to report the highest quality news, or run the risk of being ridiculed by the other news sources for reporting false information. Since the other news sources were quick to point out the lack of integrity of the other news sources for reporting in a biased manner, there was an unspoken rule to report on the news in an unskewed manner.…

From the moment that Donald Trump announced that he was running for president of the United States it seems like every news source has forgotten what it means to be objective. The main principles of objectivity are presenting a story in a fair and impartial way using only facts not editorial opinions or interoperation. (Turow, 2014) The principles of objectivity are a necessity when covering hard news, I don’t believe that you can consider a news source reliable if they don’t practice objectivity. It is not a journalist’s job to tell the public how to think rather, it’s their job to present the information to the public so the public can make their own choices.…

I think the biggest reason the “fake” news is spreading is obviously Social Media and the 24 hours news cycle. Journalists used to have to adhere to much stricter guidelines compared to a news source that is exclusively social media. In the article How Journalists Minimize Bias A Journalist from the Saint Louis Post-Dispatch stated “People are biased; the process is not. You know, we go out, we talk to multiple people, we look at a story from multiple different angles. We fact check, I have editors who scrutinize my work.…

Because of this power, it is important that media stays neutral when reporting to the public. McCarthy, Killian J., and Wilfred Dolfsma discuss in, "Neutral Media? Evidence Of Media Bias And Its Economic Impact " just how neutral journalists claim to be and how neutral the media actually is. They include a survey that asked journalist if they considered themselves neutral and the results were that 94% of the group tested labeled themselves as such. However, contrary to the journalists’ belief, evidence showed just the opposite.…

When you watch the news, do you ever question what they are telling you, or do you not even think about it because that is the single source for the information being told? Interestingly enough, the government has actually been controlling the media and the way the media conveys the news since 1917 when JP Morgan hired high ranking news managers. They were asked to determine the most influential newspapers and media outlets in America, and buy them out. They did this so they can control the daily press and media of the United States. Even today the government can somewhat control what the people of America hear and what they believe is factual.…

To find truth in journalism, one must determine which sources are biased and which ones are giving both sides of every story. People can look at multiple sources to see which ones are being bias and which ones are being neutral. In today’s society, people are oblivious as to what is the truth and what is not the truth. People should educate themselves on which news sources are reliable. For example, Fox news is conservative, which is considered as the truth seekers and is the most reliable news source because it does not favor any sides of a story.…
