Newcomer Orientation Week Program

The most significant volunteer contribution to date that I have made was volunteering at the NOW (Newcomer Orientation Week) program. It is a program designed to train individuals as "peer leaders" in their school and the larger community. During the time spam of the training session and the actual program, I was able to meet other individuals from different schools and was able to connect with them. The program really changed my personality and motivated me to come out of my comfort zone, and become a true leader. The training also helped me to overcome of my greatest areas of improvement: public speaking, allowing me to speak in front of my peers or a crowd without fear. Moreover, to this day I am able to learn about many different

A veteran to me is a patriotic, unselfish, brave, and courageous person, who would sacrifice time from their families to serve and protect our nation. As Jeff Miller once said, “The willingness of America’s Veterans to sacrifice for our country has earned them our lasting gratitude.” Veterans from every country have served throughout many wars. They have put their blood, sweat, and effort into doing the right and beneficial thing for their nation. Being a veteran means not only to serve in the military, but it means to have the selflessness and courage to go off to war to ensure the freedom of the nation.…

The first time I participated in a community service activity was Snack Pak 4 Kids. Snack Pak 4 Kids is a non-profit organization that helps provide food to students over the weekend so that they are well fed and ready to learn in school, because who can learn on an empty stomach? As I helped put food into each bag, it made me realize how big of a difference I was making in the community by simply putting a granola bar, orange juice, beef jerky, and other nutritious food in a bag. When we ran out of food to put in the bags, the people that ran the organization announced that we had enough bags worth of food to feed about 7,000 children and that astonished me. As I went home I felt really satisfied about giving back to my community for the first time and since then I’ve been participating more in community service…

Last summer I was given the opportunity to take part in the NOW program (Newcomer Orientation Week) which is organized by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). This program was first introduced to me by the settlement workers in our school who were seeking out for new peer leaders to guide newcomers. The purpose of this week-long program was to help youth newcomers with challenges from transitioning into a completely new world. We had to complete several training sessions dealing with different cases in order to get the best result. The key feature is the role and anticipation of the peer leaders who can express their experiences from their transitioning into a new life.…

In eighth grade my class visited an assisted living facility for mentally challenged adults. When we arrived, we joined the residents in planting tomatoes and carrots in the garden. I worked with a man named Tom, and while we worked we connected by talking about the Astros and the Rockets. Later in the day, we were eating lunch and he told me how happy he was to have me come and work with him and how he always loves when people come see what he does every day. Seeing mentally challenged adults like Tom living normal lives made me realize that people often have misconceived notions about those who do not fit into the regular roles of society.…

The most significant impact I have made at my high school has been through helping my fellow peers, generally through unofficially tutoring some of them. I do not think there is one instance that stands out more than the others because I always attempt to do something little everyday, be it explaining a broad concept or assisting another student in working through a problem on a review sheet. The most recent example was when one of my friends in my AP Statistics class, Shannon, sent me a text the night before a test, asking if I could help her understand some of the questions on the review sheet, which I responded to with, “I shall try my best”. When we met the next morning, thirty minutes before homeroom started, she took out the…

Being a volunteer in various programs around school and the community has shaped me into the young lady I am today. It taught me responsibility, communication, leadership and so much more that students can only imagine. However, volunteering taught me more than just who I am, but showed me how I wanted to spend the rest of my life. Granting wishes for these kids was one thing, but meeting them in person and seeing the smile on their faces when their dreams would come true brought utter joy to my heart. That, and my love for science have inspired me to become a pharmaceutical scientist and embark on my journey to seek the cure for childhood cancer so that these kids can make their dreams last a…

My desire to help people developed when I was a casework for the Department of Children and Families (DCF). As a caseworker, I assessed the needs of clients by determining eligibility for food stamps, cash assistance and health coverage. I enjoyed talking to clients, learning of their situations and connecting them with resources to help break the cycle of welfare. After a year at DCF I felt the need to do more for myself and follow my dreams of joining the military. From the moment I stepped off the bus at basic training, going through technical school and working in different units I was surrounded by people from diverse backgrounds.…

By volunteering for Tabitha and serving elderly residents at both the Cove and the Seagren houses changed my life for the better. I chose to volunteer with the elderly because they are a population that I do not have much experience working with. Having two elderly grandmothers, both turned 93 this year, I have some experience with this cohort but not a lot. Right off the bat I realized that communicating with each resident varied depending on their communication ability and I had to learn to adapt both how I communicated and how I listened to them communicating to me.…
