Newark Public Schools Rescue: Philanthropy Is Not Enough
This paper will explore the philanthropic misadventure of Mark Zuckerberg, Co-founder of Facebook, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and then Mayor Cory Booker. They created the Foundation for Newark’s Future, to improve the Newark School system by infusing 100 million dollars. I will explore the leadership structure, players, challenges, and decisions, develop thoughts and opinions on the roles of the leadership, the leadership structure, and the leadership strategy in this endeavor. I will explain how it was potentially responsible, for its failure. I will critique the leadership elements of this case study from crisis and strategic management perspectives. I will evaluate the current leadership practices, leadership traits, team leadership, and organizational elements in this case. Finally, I will place myself into the role of …show more content…
The Plight of Newark’s Schools
Newark is the most populous city of New Jersey, the population in 2010 was 277,140 (Newark, New Jersey, n.d.). The racial distribution in 2010 was predominantly Black 52.4%, followed by Hispanic at 33.8% (Newark, New Jersey, n.d.). The number of households with female as head was 27,347 or 28.9% . The median household income in 2015 was $30,966 (it was $26,913 in 2000) (Crime rate in Newark, New Jersey, n.d.). The United States Census Bureau statistics found nearly 30% were living in poverty in 2011. Unemployment has persistently been above 9%.
