New York State Museum: Poem Analysis

Improved Essays
On Friday, I took a study break and explored the New York State Museum right down the road from ACPHS. The museum houses many artifacts that are prehistoric and historic, as well as pieces of art that reflect the development of New York. I was informed as I walked through the doors and spoke to the older lady running the front desk that it is the nation’s oldest and largest state museum. There were a variety of exhibits that a few of my friends and I explored at the State museum. However, two exhibits stood out to me in particular since we just learned about them in the past few weeks of Contemporary class.
The first exhibit I chose dealt with slavery. One informational panel within one of the displays talked about slavery and sugar, which

I found a lot of quotes from Langston Hughes through each display. Langston Hughes was an American poet who portrayed the struggling lives of the working-class blacks that lived in America. Since we just read Hughes poem, “Harlem” in class, I could clearly understand what his intentions where for writing the poem. Harlem in the 1920s was the center for black political activism. Many race riots were happening and a lot of art, music and literature flourished due to this. Poet Langston Hughes is one of the most famous among the rest of poets during the Harlem Renaissance. His Poem reflected the struggle to enjoy full rights of African Americans despite racism, poverty, and limited opportunities. He confronted racial stereotypes, protested social conditions and expanded the image that African Americans had for themselves. It can be said that Langston Hughes was a “people’s poet.”
Overall, I had a great time exploring the New York State Museum. Since the State Museum occupies the first four floors in the State Education Building, there was so much to see and read. However, even on limited time, my friends and I even had the chance to look at some modern art and ride the famous carousal on the fourth floor. It is always nice to learn outside the classroom, especially when you can relate certain aspects to what you have learned in

Langston Hughes wrote “Harlem” as a prediction of the upcoming clash African Americans would embrace in order to gain civil liberties. The poem also serves as a rallying cry to those pondering what to do with their frustration of the way blacks were treated in America before the civil rights movement. Hughes delivers an emotional appeal to readers, urging them to wake up and see the future of a people bursting with ambition but held back by discrimination. In the poem "Harlem" Hughes uses figurative language to powerfully convey the consequences of oppression which deny black Americans the dream of equality. Hughes uses similes, anaphora, alliteration, and metaphor to help the reader visualize and empathize with the plight of African Americans…

In my visit to the Chicago History Museum (Chicago Historical Society)- on Saturday, June 18th, 2016- I experienced and was subject to visual study of various artifacts and exhibits which greatly expanded the range of my views and thoughts on history and the various smaller components which make up the history of a place, person, or thing. Such exhibits ranged from minute details making up a whole gallery on the evolution of everyday clothing and costumes in Chicago to major events which have impacted the structure of the city like the Chicago Fire which has grand and whole rooms and/or wings of the museum dedicated to them. This layout of the museum helped me understand that History, like many other fields of study, is made up of various parts or events which all cohesively blend together to help the general public have…
