New York Repertory Orchestr Song Analysis

On April 7, 2018 the New York Repertory Orchestra played in the church of St. Mary the Virgin and performed three musical pieces. The architecture of this church is so beautiful, it has a bunch of details, paintings and sculpture that resemble the Catholic religion. Inside the breathtaking church, where the father usually gives his sermon, the orchestra took their places surrounding the conductor. The cello and the percussion were in the back and the violins and the brass were in the front. They started to warm up as they did, big groups of people began to fill the seats. He lived from 1862 to 1918. The program explains that Debussy was inspired by his travels through Spain. The song does not tell a story, but it reflects the sensation or feelings that Debussy had while he was visiting Spain. The song starts strong, it has lots of contrast between loud and soft. The tone of color of this piece is adventures and curious. I felt this way due to the start of the winds instruments. The winds were soft and with a slow tempo, but as the song developed this smoothness was contrasted by the strings. The strings provided a jagged melodic line due to the abrupt changes that the song had. That gave the song a more variable sensation to the piece. They also used silence to create the change between the smoothness and jagged melodic line. I enjoyed this more than the first one, because of its exciting feeling to it. When I was hearing this song, I imagined somebody having a good time, dancing in a party, eating great food and simply just enjoying the moment. During the performance of this song, I notice the behavior of the audience, they seem like they were dancing with the song but always maintaining composure. Also, there was a complete silence in the audience, you could hear people sneeze. The amount of respect that the audience have to this type of performances is immense. I’ve never seen this type of behavior before. As soon as the movement was over, again as it was rehearsed the audience erupted in applause. The conductor directed his orchestra to stand and bow with him, once the applause finished we transitioned into the intermission.
