Well it’s the the Fourth of July, and its my first day as a official New York City lifeguard. A bunch of determination and training brought me to this day. It all started when my Dad said I couldn’t pass the NYC lifeguard swim test. I said I was happy with the job I have and liked the group of people I worked with, I loved the camaraderie. But after looking up the requirements and salary, I made up my mind that I’m going to prove my dad wrong. I began to train for the fifty yard qualifying swim test that had to be done in thirty five seconds. I was always competitive but never joined a swim team, but instead played volleyball, bowling, and baseball for Lawrence High School. As I was training, my fastest time was thirty two seconds, that not being well enough for …show more content…
After passing the qualifying test I moved on to the municipal lifeguard training program; which is a forty hour training course, a CPR course, and a written test. The hardest part of the program is the final swimming test; to qualify for a pool assignment, candidates must be able to swim 440 yards in 7 minutes and 40 seconds, or 6 minutes and 40 seconds to qualify for a beach assignment. Though out this whole process family and friends are making bets on the outcome. But I knew what the outcome was going to be, I was determined, all that training boiled down to that one moment. Walking to Penn Station I let out a sigh of relief, and hopped on the LIRR to go home. When I got home I told everyone the great news that I passed for beach assignment. At that moment I proved that determination, courage, and persistence paves the way for great accomplishments. Fast forward to the Fourth of July and I'm in Cliff Camp. In Cliff Camp all the new recruits train for two weeks, doing CPR, rescues, and watching the water with a senior lifeguard. During this time I stayed with my Grandma and for my one day off a week I took the Q22 bus home to go to the beach with my

I knew it was not going to be easy to be inducted but I also knew that by doing so I would push myself to become a part of a brotherhood that would enlighten me. Of course I did not know exactly what to expect, I just wanted to maintain my grades and my health as those are the two most important things keeping me eligible for an appointment at West Point. The first thing I had to do was get through zero night.…

    1) How would you be a valuable Head lifeguard? Knowing that having the title of head lifeguard comes with additional responsibility and dedication on top of regular lifeguard duties, I believe that I am more than qualified not only with my skills as a regular lifeguard, but my ability to be a leader, communicate with others, and have a strong sense of responsibility. Not only would I utilize my strengths to be a responsible and dedicated head lifeguard, but I would also strive to set an example for others, which I believe to be one of the most important factors of being an effective leader as a head lifeguard. 2) Why are you interested in becoming a Head lifeguard? After writing my creative writing stories, I have discovered an abundance about grabbing the reader through dialogue and characterization. The short story The Lifeguard, by Mary Morris, taught me to understand how and when to describe characters. By using direct and indirect characterization, which can be seen in the beginning of the short story, ”I’d have to hold them at bay. They’d offer to buy me things-Cokes, hot dogs-and rub cream on my back while I sat like an idol”. Morris showed me a picture of what the lifeguard looked like and how he acted, which enticed me to continue reading.…

Of the many different influential experiences I have had over the past years, the one that stands out to me the most as a true rite of passage was starting my first job as a lifeguard at Nassau Country Club. It taught me lessons like the true meaning of hard work, the the value of a day's pay and most of all, what it means to have someone's life in one's hands. These lessons were given to me through my own experiences, as well as by my boss, Dr. Dan Cavallo D.O, one of the hardest working men I know. It all began, however, with a huge stack of towels. On my first day of work, I was more nervous than I had ever been in my entire life.…

The day seemed to drag on and on, as I waited, counting down the days to California. It was a humid, sunny afternoon down at the Alton pool, where I usually spend most of my summer days working as a lifeguard. Today was very different than most…. And maybe the reason why was because it was my last day of work before I flew off to the big L.A. Most days at the pool the time went by slower than any I have ever known, with the scorching hot sun burning my skin, and little kids yelling at their friends telling each other secrets or what they want to play next.…

The bed mercilessly taunts my exhausted limbs to return but my determined heart persuades me to brave the trial by water once more. As I dive over the ice cold pool, dread and regret fill every moment until my body finally makes contact. For two, sometimes three, hours the situation will only worsen as I repeatedly raise my arms above my head and pull back as hard as possible. Weeks of this pass by, all for the sake of being able to travel through 100 meters of water a few milliseconds faster. Swimming has been my primary sport since the age of eight.…
