New York City Department Store Survey Summary

Patrick-Andre Mather replicated the New York City department store survey in 2012, which was made famous by Labov in 1962. In this study, Mather firstly found that the frequency of postvocalic (r) had increased since Labov's experiment. This was even more so for the tested subject in the department store, Saks, the higher end of the three. In this store, the sales assistants were more careful on how they pronounced the word. This happened 80% of the time, which was a 20% increase from 1962. Secondly, in the department store, Macy's, which was the middle class store showed that the age distribution had changed, and that younger speakers were using or pronouncing the (r) more often than the older speakers.
