New Traffic Law

Decent Essays
A new traffic law will clear the far left lane on certain highways in Tenessee. Proponents of the law are strongly against blocking the far left lane. Whenever a driver blocks the far left lane, other drivers are more likely to be in an accident. The Governer of Tennessee signed a bill that allows police to ticket drivers who use the far left lane inappropriately. The new traffic law pertains to drivers who are driving on highways that have more than two lanes in one direction.

The formal name for the law is HB1416, and the law requires all drivers to drive in the right lanes. Drivers are allowed to use the left lane for passing or overtaking another vehicle. Senator Frank Niceley has stated that the rule will lower incidents of road rage

Both the regulation 455/07 and the demerit point system work together to maintain road safety in Ontario, by targeting the extreme drivers and the drivers that do not follow the rules of the road by classifying what they are doing as wrong, and by punishing them accordingly with the demerit point system. Summary B.C’s controversial automatic roadside prohibition (ARP) scheme – the toughest drinking and driving law in the country – has been largely upheld in a recent decision by the Supreme Court of Canada. Introduced in 2010, the ARP scheme involved efforts to remove impaired drivers from B.C’s roads through the use of license suspensions, financial penalties and remedial programs. The scheme necessitates roadside checks and analysis of drivers’ breath samples using an approved screening device (ASD). Several drivers had challenged the B.C.’s roadside prohibitions in recent years, claiming that the ARP scheme was a criminal law in disguise and invades the federal government’s exclusive jurisdiction over criminal law.…

In my home state of Mississippi, we have not had many laws passed, which are named in honor of crime victims. One of the most recent laws of this nature would be what is known as “Nathan’s Law”, named in honor of Nathan Key, who had been struck and killed by a vehicle, as he exited a school bus at his house. This incident occurred in Jones County, Mississippi on December 11, 2009, and Nathan was five years old at the time of his death. The origins of “Nathan’s Law”, as stated, began on December 11, 2009, as five year old Nathan Key exited a school bus, after school, and attempted to cross the road to get to the his house (Gebben v. State of Mississippi, 2012). Nathan had exited the stopped school bus, after his 11 year old brother,…

I don’t think they read far enough, personally I think Rule 182 & 183 spell it out pretty clearly. What the British Cycling article doesn't make clear is if they are talking only about left turns, as right turning vehicles are already required to giveway to oncoming vehicles. If they are (left turns) would they be expecting a vehicle turning left to stop and give way to a cycle approaching from behind, or simply to reiterate rule 182/183? Seems to me more a case of introducing new legislation where existing legislation and codes of practice provides sufficient cover and more enforcement would be a better…
