Reading the New Testament for school has been an interesting experience. There were many weeks, when after completing the assigned reading, I would say to myself, “There is nothing there.” The stories were all familiar and there seemed to be no meat in the verses. These opportunities may have been to give someone a blessing or it may have been an opportunity to serve in a certain calling. Most often I really do not know what it was, I just know that there has been something. In far too many cases I have failed the test. Because of this, I know that I have missed out on opportunities to bless others and to receive blessings in my life. They teach of his role as the Savior and Redeemer of all mankind. Through this, we learn of his glory and majesty as the only begotten son of the father who sits on the right hand of God. I saw all of these teachings, but that is not what was impressed upon my heart and mind. Instead, it was an insight or a realization that Jesus is a real person with feelings and emotions. When at the last supper as Jesus revealed that one of the apostles would betray him, he spoke of being “troubled in spirit.” (John 13:21) In the garden of Gethsemane Jesus showed emotion as he prayed that the bitter cup would be taken from him.
