Well it has been almost 4 months that I have been attending Roanoke Valley Early College. I love it here and I don’t see how anyone couldn’t. So far I have learned a lot about school. By taking time to observe my surroundings and everyone around me, I have learned that everyone in high school is not your friend and that I am learning how to sense a bad vibe before I let anyone get too close to me. RVEC is the only school that has taught me that all teachers are not these people that hate their job because the teachers here including the ones I don’t take yet are always showing us that they really want to be there and help us and teach us.…

I am a first-generation Latina student at The Ohio State University. Being from inner city Toledo, Ohio, I attended a public district where 80% of students received free or reduced lunch and the graduation rate was at an all time low of 49%. My parents had not graduated high school, therefore once college applications became relevant, they unfortunately could not help me. Through 25 different scholarships, I was able to attend OSU without any loans and truly believed I was on the right track to achieving the "American Dream". To my dismay, once classes began, I was lost.…

Of all the fondest memories I’ve acquired in my lifetime, one particular memory that proves itself to be especially notable was the very first time my delicate three-year old foot touched American soil. I recall clutching my mother’s warm, rugged hands between the gaps of my fingers, sensing her fearful excitement to be amongst the buildings that touched the sky and the air that is filled with the aroma of opportunity. We dreamt of many things, but never beyond our wildest ambitions, did we ever dream that I would be in a position to potentially guide other individuals trying to navigate this place we all call home. One of my biggest childhood dreams came into fruition a short while ago when I was admitted into Vanderbilt University.…

Standing on the stage at the Department of Nutritional Sciences graduation ceremony in Bailey Hall, my brother proudly declared “By graduating today from Cornell, we are already ahead of many other graduates. Not only are we graduating from the greatest university in the world, but we are graduating from the best department this university has to offer.” That quote alone solidified my desire to one day attend Cornell. I used to visit my brother, Parsa Salehi, at least every other month in Cornell. I vividly remember Cornell’s distinct, incomparable features, including the delicious Cornell dairy bar—before its renovation—the tantalizingly delicious dining hall food, the plentitude of breathtaking waterfalls, the musical terrace above the Olin…

My interest in the Naval Academy and the fleet began as just another college option. I have not had any family member serve in the Navy and was rather indifferent to military service, other than my admiration for the men and women who serve. As I continued to explore my options, the Naval Academy remained on the backburner until I visited for the summer STEM program two years ago. As soon as I first walked on post, I instantly knew I loved it--the beautiful old architecture, the shimmering blue water, and the white-clad Midshipmen marching crisply down Stribbling. This past summer, when I visited again for NASS, I decided the Naval Academy was the one for me.…
