Growing five times its previous size, the OAG represents a coming of age for Ottawa and its arts scene. “Our unique approach to this major cultural infrastructure project exemplifies how we do things differently and effectively at the gallery, working in concert with our community, while reflecting a diverse, progressive and humanistic view of society. The inaugural exhibition, including the name, was developed in collaboration with the people of Kitigan Zibi Anishinābeg in Quebec, and the Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn in Ontario. The exhibition incorporates:
• 6,500 years of art making in the Ottawa-Gatineau region
• 193 historical and contemporary works of art
• 181 artists
• 11 new artwork commissions Beyond the importance of the inaugural exhibition, the new Ottawa Art Gallery is looking to be as inclusive as possible:
• free admission and programming for visitors of all ages
• fully accessibility
