Outcome: Although, Search and Rescue teams were dispatched immediately, there was no place to put survivors. The Superdome was the designated shelter during the hurricane. Yet, emergency management officials intended to utilize the Superdome only during the hurricane; it filled up quickly once flood victims were added. Because flooding was not planned for, the Superdome lacked a steady supply of essential resources (e.g. food, water, toilet paper, and baby supplies).…
He had to be able to stand up in the face of merciless persecution and not retaliate” After reading about his early life, it is not amazing that he had the athletic talent but that he could actually take verbal and physical abuse for two long years without ever defending himself. During his early career he experienced vicious taunts, bottle throwing, inability to get adequate accommodations or food while traveling with the team as well as biased reporting, all because he was a black man in a white privileged nation. To me this seemed a stark contrast to the young Army officer, so it really showcased his ability to sacrifice self for future generations and this is a rare quality. It reminded me of the philosophy and tactics of Martin Luther King Jr., C.O.R.E. and S.N.C.C. as they were fighting racism peacefully. He did finally reach a point when he could self- advocate and speak out against players, fans and the press about his differential treatment based on his skin color.…

As I was excitingly woken up by my brothers on Christmas, I ran downstairs to see what I had gotten. As we had just finished up opening presents, expecting no more, my mom told my brothers and I that there was one more present and got out her phone. Whenever my mom pulls out her phone, the family knows she’s about to record something or take pictures . So, my brothers and I cautiously looked at each other, deciding if we should get excited or not.…
However, people in New Orleans are always living in the fear of a second “Katrina” mostly because of its unique geography condition. As Americans, we hold sports a little bit closer to our hearts than we probably should. The major television broadcasts we watch are primarily sports. Football, baseball, basketball, mixed martial arts, and a few others are the ones that captivate our minds. Each has its ups and downs and each can be remembered by an underdog story. We all know what this is; the heavily favored loser rises to the top to take down the seemingly unbeatable champion.…

New Orleans, 1953, nurturing the unique blend of rhythm and blues as it poured throughout the city.…

Growing up in Louisiana has been a part of my life. Before moving back to Virginia in the 7th grade, we resided in Louisiana for about 7 years. We would travel to New Orleans very often for various sporting events that my siblings and I would participate in or we would go to watch the New Orleans Saints or the New Orleans Pelicans play. New Orleans has so much to offer that for all ages. Many people may think that New Orleans is only for adults but there are some kid-friendly things to do.…

Danny Glover once stated, “When Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf and the floodwaters rose and tore through New Orleans, it did not turn the region into a Third World country…it revealed one” (Glover). In the wake of this darkness, Hurricane Katrina proved to America that as a nation, there was no way to prepare for a disaster of this size. As the winds raged on and the waters crashed against the coast, ultimately drowning out around 80% of the state, Hurricane Katrina proved to be more than just a category five hurricane, proving to be historical, holding a position of the third deadliest hurricane that has affected the United States of America. Three reasons Hurricane Katrina proved unpreparedness were; The New Orleans levee system was…
