As a new Nation, Unites States had several challenges in its development. With the extensive production of cotton and tobacco, which required a lot of labor work, a number of slaves was increasing, the slave trade became extremely common and widespread, and it raised conflicts since black people were not satisfied with the way they were treated and also some white people opposed slavery, especially in the middle of 19th century during the Second Great Awakening. There were several rebellions organized in opposition to slavery such as Net Turner’s rebellion in Virginia in August of 1831 when Nat Turner who was a slave and his followers killed their owners with the total of almost 60 white people. It led to many deaths, and it threatened other slave owners because it meant that they could be easily killed while sleeping. Therefore, the conditions of slaves and free blacks were harshened, including making it illegal to teach slaves. Besides, this rebellion raised debates about the abolishing of slavery since it would solve the problem and remove the threat from white people. However, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Andrew Jackson all had slaves and they did not find it wrong. Besides, both Washington and Jackson were trying hard to catch the escaped slaves such as Ona Judge in the case of Washington and a mulatto slave in the Jackson’s possession. During the Second Great Awakening, the abolition and antislavery movement took the beginning saying that slavery is immoral and should stopped. For example, one of the figures of the movement was abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison who started his own abolitionists newspaper, and started American Anti-Slavery Society in 1832 that became widespread among Unites States, especially, in the Northeast.
