New Media's Impact On The Sports Industry

Sporting events would not be where they are at today, if it was not for new media. New media is defined as “the emergence of digital, computerized, or networking information and communication technologies in the later part of the twentieth century” ((Masteralexis, Barr, & Hurns, 2012, p. #442). What new media means to me is, a way to connect the fans in a way that brings in a bigger audience. By providing streaming videos with smart devices, on line information, and instant updates on any team gives the fans everything they need to know to stay informed about their teams progress. This allows people to go about their day and still be entertained with not just sports, but anything worldwide. New media has revolutionized staying in touch with …show more content…
Whichever media someone chooses to express themselves with each one will accomplish the same thing, but for me personally using Facebook is an easier tool to use to reach several people. The impact that Facebook has on the sports industry is one that cannot be measured, but can be seen on the dramatically evolved landscape of social culture. Anyone can participate in sharing or posting whatever they want to talk about. Sharing photos of the event, giving their opinion about how the event went, and even recommend others to go has a huge impact on the sporting industry. Trends on Facebook pop up all the time, take the water challenge for example. Once you were challenge to dump cold water over your head, it was your reasonability to nominate others to do the same. It became popular because it was for donating money to a good cause, and it was fun to watch. This event took off very quickly because of the influence that Facebook has on the entire world and how easy it is to reach others. The newsiest trend is the mannequin challenge.
