The two countries decided to settle in this foreign land and call it home. For the Spanish it was terrible depending on how you look at it. The Spanish was scared of the religious practices that the Indians were involved in. For example, when the Spanish could not cure a sickness, and saw the Indians try to cure the same sickness with their traditional medicine, they started to get scared. They started to hang Indians for practicing traditional medicine, besides the traditional practices the Spanish also used the Indians and forced them to work in the silver mines. By August of 1680 their settlement in America was no longer safe. From the Jones book Created Equal they mentioned how the Indians started the Pueblo Revolt. The Pueblo Revolt in New Mexico was one of the largest, most successful revolt ever. With this revolt many people were killed, but by the time the war ended. The Spanish realized that they were not the majority but instead they were the minority. As time passed the Spanish eventually gave in and started to let the Indians practice their traditional medicine and religion, and stopped forcing the Indians to work in the silver mines. For the Spanish it was the greed and the possibility of wealth that drove the people to settle in America. The first time the Spanish found land in America was Florida, but slowly they started to expand towards New Mexico, and Virginia. The people who wanted to settle in this new land were mostly people who wanted to spread the word of God, merchants hoping to get rich from their generous king or finding huge amount of gold, and soldiers to protect and claim the land in the name of their king. While the Spanish was settled in their new land they were able to use the animals to their own advantage. They would use the sheep for clothing, and the horses would either be used for hunting or war. It was a bit different for the English, because of their late settlement in America, but eventually they found a place where they could call home. The English settlers, settled in Jamestown. The type of people who came to this new, unknown land were mostly families hoping to have a new start, people who wanted to share their religion, and people who were looking for passages through the Northwest. The English were able to do this because the merchants and the elites who saw an opportunity to get richer financed these settlements and colonization's hoping to get a huge return.
