Many students can make the connection of starting at a new school and not fitting in due to their race, ethnicity, social or economic status. This is a story that could take place today, and it takes on current day issues that minorities face. Jordan, the protagonist, is 12 years old, the age of many middle schoolers, and this is a classic story about self-identity and coming of age.
