In the early 20th century most of the ‘True’ Americans where in fact the 2nd or 3rd generation of European immigrants who came to the United States for a new start, A better life.
However this ‘Open door’ policy America had dramatically changed seeing a lot of hostility build up towards what where known as ‘new’ immigrants especially throughout the 1920s and 1930s. This is an equally important factor as it shows there was always a flaw with the ‘melting pot’ theory and hostility has always been a major part of America’s history.
By the 1870s there was over 1000,000 Chinese immigrants in the United States. They were often threatened with racial violence and driven out by WASPs who were threatened by the cheap labour they were willing to offer, and in 1877 racial tension as well as hostility started to take its toll on America which in turn lead to the anti-Chinese riots in San Francisco; which finally lead to the 1882 Chinese exclusion act banning Chinese immigrants from entering the USA completely for 10 years. The fear of the ‘Other‘ starting to spread throughout the U.S and if you didn’t fit in the ‘True American’ stereo type you were shunned. Most immigrants at this time were poorly malnourished as they mainly left their own countries due to poverty or war. Highman also stated “By western European standards, the masses of southern and eastern European were educationally deficient, socially back ward and bizarre in appearance” which caused a mass outrage toward these ‘undesirable’ immigrants, who weren’t seen as human to the Wasp community. With these new immigrants being looked upon as alien due to social fears the religious side also had a part to play.
With Christianity being the corner stone of American religion in the early 20th century and with the different races immigrating over to America white protestant establishments soon felt there way of life was being threatened. With the influx of Jew, Catholics and Orthodox Christians, WASPS thought that these other religions would wipe out The ‘True’ Americans religion, this lead to hostility building up towards these new immigrants.
