New England Lyrics Analysis

The first genre I picked is the Ballad which is a narrative song that came from New England having originally been brought to the Americas by immigrants from the British Isles. Someone who sings a ballad is basically a storyteller. The ballad is written as a poem but is intended to be sung. There are two important characteristics of ballads. The first is incremental repletion which is the repetition of one or more lines with small but significant variations that advance the action. The other is the ballad stanza which is four lines. The folk ballad is mostly anonymous and the presentation impersonal. I personally like ballads due to them telling stories. These stories can tell about many different aspects of life including love or death. For example, the song “Barbry Allen” tells a story of a young man dying for the love of Barbara Allen. Barbara at first only scorns him. Upon hearing the church bells of his funeral, she finally realizes that she regrets her decision. She then dies of heartbreak to be buried right beside the man. …show more content…
Many of these are derived from British folk music in New England. Lyrics are a set of words that make up a song, usually consisting of verses and choruses. Lyricist is the name the writer of lyrics is called. The meaning of lyrics can either be explicit or implicit. Lyrics include several different types including the following: love songs, ceremonial songs, folk hymns, and many more. Lyric songs typically tell emotions or moods differently than ballads. Lyric Songs are also a favorite of mine. This is because of the different way to tell about something. Lyrics are different than ballads because they do not just tell exactly what the story is and is more private. Many of the songs we listen to today are lyric

Ballad of Birmingham tells the story of a mother protecting her child from the violence of the Freedom March, while, My Papa’s Waltz tells the story of a child trying to protect his mother from a maybe violent encounter by stopping his father. Both poems also have a darker, saddened tone. My Papa’s Waltz created a darkened tone when the father was introduced with whiskey on his breath that caused his son to held on “like death” (My Papa’s Waltz, Roethke). Ballad of Birmingham created a darker tone by introducing a violent Freedom March and offering a more “peaceful” solution, which led to a child’s tragic…

The song that I will be representing is far well to Nova Scotia. Nova scotia, which is Latin for “New Scotland”, is one of three Maritime Provinces in Canada. Nova scotia is the second smallest province in Canada with up to 55,284 square kilometers of land. This land has been a destination for sailors, adventures and settlers all across history, because of there close location to the Atlantic sea and there mid tempeture climate.…

Beth Cuthand’s poem, “For All the Settlers Who Secretly Sing”, portrays a character, a Settler, who is referred to as a you throughout the poem, although this is just an assumption. The settler has moved into an indigenous land, unaware of the cultural beliefs, ignorant about the spiritual beings and unaware of nature’s importance to the land. Cuthand’s poem, “For All the Settlers Who Secretly Sing, portrays cultural acceptance and how a person is able to achieve spiritual awareness, through nature’s presence. Cuthand uses personification and imagery to demonstrate the different stages of self-awareness and the role of nature in the process of cultural acceptance.…

A lyric poem is a type of emotional songlike poetry, distinguished from a dramatic and narrative poem. Emily Bronte uses a lyric poem to express her great longing for freedom. Lyric poems require the author to be speaking in first person. Bronte clearly does this in her poem when she symbolically says; “could my hand unlock the chain” she is referring to releasing herself to freedom by suicide. She presents the bird and herself as one.…

I uses the accompanying section of J.D. Salinger's "Catcher in the Rye": "Furthermore, the band began playing one of those truly moderate tunes, similar to "Stairway to Heaven" or "Freebird" that most likely have truly extraordinary verses or something however the melody itself simply is terrible recently dreadful. At that point this genuine fake person, with the hair all slicked back on the highest point of his head remained strong with the Sax and did a performance. I nearly passed on. That is to say, totally kicked the bucket in that spot. It must be the cheesiest solo I had ever heard.…

The way that the group sounded to me was that it felt like the sound was mostly harsh and piercing. At first it did sound smooth but around thirty seconds later the guitar went faster so it made the sound harsh. When all of the instruments are put together it all really sounded harsh with only like one spot where it was mellow. When it got in the middle and the end of the song, I really had to cover my ears because it got so loud to the point my speakers made the piercing sound. Sad part is that my speakers were on low since YouTube on my computer is always loud if the volume is over 40.…

According to Google, a ballad means “a poem or song narrating a story in short stanzas.” One of a modern day ballad that I first thought of was the album, 4 Your Eyez Only by J. Cole. If take a close listen to the album, you will see that there is an hidden narrative that connects the the album’s tracks together. The center of the album is the murder of J. Cole’s friend, James McMillan Jr., who got caught up in the streets. On the last track on the album also called “4 Your Eyez Only”, sets up the whole theme for the album.…

The song “Yesterday written by Paul McCartney and released by the iconic band The Beatles in 1965 is one of my favorites. It is a slow melodic song, McCartney provides the main vocals. He talks about losing his love not fully understanding why and the aftermath of losing her and how hard love is.. While it’s a fairly short and simple song it has such powerful emotion and beauty. There are some music elements or principles that i noticed in this song.…

This is because love is deep, crazy and strong, when you throw yourself in it is intense and this is shown by the full stanzas, the single lines are the less intense, calmer parts of love. 'Mean Time ' is similar as it has disjointed sentences so that the reader can relate and the pauses allow time for the reader to think and empathize with the narrator. To aid this, the poem is ambiguous as every one suffers loss no matter what gender and we all feel it deeply. This is also why three tenses are used throughout the poem, to show that loss is eternal and ever effecting.…

The music of the younger generation always seems to strike fear into the hearts of the older generation. One only has to think of the beginnings of Rock and Roll and how the older crowd predicted youthful promiscuity, violence and anarchy. It’s easy to see why the idea of censoring music came about and how that idea still plays out in the music of today’s youth. One only has to listen to certain songs on the radio today to find that the “bleep” of censorship is still in fashion. Oddly enough however, when one searches “songs about censorship” on the internet, one finds that there is far more information about songs that have been censored than there is about songs dealing with censorship.…
