The New York Colony was one of the 13 colonies located on the Atlantic coast of North America. The original 13 colonies were divided into three areas, The New England, The Middle and The Southern colonies. The New York Colony was one of the Middle Colonies. It began as the Dutch trading outpost. In 1664, King Charles II gave the land in between New England and Virginia, to his brother James, the Duke of York. Dutch traders already occupied much of this land and landowners The English engaged and took the Dutch New Netherlands and changed the name to New York. Back then, colonists made their living in a variety of ways. They traded fur and lumber, they sold slaves, and some worked as merchants and tradesman in the towns of the colony. Most colonists were farmers, who cleared large acres of land by hand to grow crops. Corn was the most popular crop. People and animals could eat it. They also grew wheat, vegetables, and tobacco. Then in 1664, with a revival of British interest in colonial activity, the Dutch settlement was taken over through conquest. Although, the Dutch did continued to exercise an important social and economic influence. Their gabled roofs became a permanent part of the landscape, and their merchants gave the city its commercial atmosphere. The habits bequeathed by the Dutch also gave New York pleased many different life styles, quite different from the austere atmosphere of Puritan Boston. In New York, feasting and merrymaking marked holidays. Many Dutch customs, like calling your neighbors to share a drink with you on New Year's Day and the visit of Santa at Christmas time Dutch influenced customs, which are still around in the present day.
