New College Degrees Underemployment Rate

American jobs are being outsourced or automated in today's market. Automation and outsourcing does little, to stop the coming wave of recent graduates with high level degrees. Many of these graduates are excited to leave school and join the labor force. Many recent college graduates are having a hard time finding work that fits their degrees. Instead many of these graduates end up either underemployed or unemployed. An article by Monica Gabor named New College Degree in Hand: Now What explains the troubles of these graduates. Her article states that “The underemployment rate for new college graduates has risen substantially since 2000, with a growing number of graduates accepting jobs that are part time or low paying jobs or both. It is expected to gain “135,300” new software and application development jobs before the year 2024, with an overall gain of “531,400” jobs (8). This is due impart to higher demand for cloud computing and the need to be connected. Following Hogan and Robert’s trend, he then lists the growth rate of the computer and mathematical occupation field. He states that “employment is projected to increase 13.1% (8).” Out of this percentile is the statistician and operations research analysts, they have “projected growth rates of 33.8% and 30.2%, respectively (8).” This due to the continual emphasis on the use of big data within large companies. Looking further into this article also displays the highest paying job type within the computer and mathematical occupation field. The job that pays the most is computer and information research scientists, who are paid “$108,360” annually (8). Many of these jobs within this field require a Bachelor’s, and sometime a Master’s degree for higher mathematical occupations. Thus making it a requirement to have access to some form of higher education or certification. This is one of the many downsides brought to light, while researching this field. Another problem is the likelihood of the job being outsourced and updated. Even though there are problems with the computer and mathematical job field there are many attractions. For example, the job of software engineer will be needed more and more as we move into to the digital age. Thus making it a highly valued positon, that are also very competitive. Another attraction is the flexible work hours you have as a technology worker in some large companies. This shows that the jobs within computer and mathematical occupation field are highly promising, well paying, and growing
