A Critical Response a new “War” Fought Within a Classroom Modern classes face a challenge that they were not facing in years past known as the “New Classroom War”, the challenge to keep students preoccupied with learning the material from the class instead of getting distracted on phones or useless websites such as Facebook. Their are several ways a teacher can combat in this war such as: using the technology to teach lessons, use programs on phones or computers that will allow the students to learn while still using their technology, or simply not allow any technology of any sorts in a classroom. Although the article “New Class (room) War” brings up a few valid points, the only appropriate response to the article is disagreement. The article, written by Samuel G. Freedman, explains through several stories how the modern day professor is fighting a war against technology and its side effects. The instructors are not fighting against the technology itself but rather the distractions that are initiated from the technology. He argues that the lecturers must work harder at keeping the attention of their students so they do not get side tracked on social media websites or texting. One example is a program sold from the company Smart Technologies, based out of Canada. The program, which is currently selling for approximately 779 dollars for one teacher, allows the teachers to spy on students who are their laptops during class. The program also includes interactive bonuses such as viewing a single students screen and “freeze it at a click.” (Freedman par. 18) Not only are these programs extremely expensive but they also are not the best way to fight the battle. The most effective way to fight back is to use the technology that the students are already using in class to teach a lesson.
