The New Belgium Brewing Company strives to reduce its impact on the environment by doing multiple things. First, the company has implemented a number of cost-efficient and energy-saving alternatives. According to the company, 100% of the electricity that they use are through renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. They incorporated sun tubes that help to light the brew house with natural daylight. Also, the company became the country’s first brewery to purchase 100% of its electricity from wind power in 1999 in an effort to understand its carbon footprint. The company’s founders Kim Jordan and Jeff Lebesch decided that the company’s purpose is going to be more than profitable. Not just measuring the success of the company in economic terms, but also of contribution to the community and saving the environment. The New Belgium Brewing Company’s is a very successful company because they commit to their purpose, core values and beliefs and they show that to customers very clearly by what they do. They make great efforts to do positive things ethically, environmentally and socially. It is true that alcoholic beverages can be harmful to the health of the consumers and there are many people believe that a company sells alcoholic beverages is not socially responsible. However, just because the product that they sell might have a harmful effect to the consumers does not make the company automatically irresponsible. Also, the company is promoting responsible drinking and discouraging the sale of alcohol to minors. Moreover, the company is doing a great job being environmentally friendly in their manufacturing. From these efforts, the company has become a B corporation in 2013. The definition of a B corporation is “for-profit companies certified by the nonprofit B Lab to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.” (B Lab) According to the New Belgium Brewing Company, “Commitment to being a force for good has been a part of our company's identity and vision since starting the business in 1991, and becoming a Certified B Corporation in 2013 helped to further codify this long-held value.” (New Belgium Brewing
