The New Americans Welcome Center is resource center that is geared to help newcomers from all over the country feel welcomed in American. The services that are provided by The New Americans Welcome Center are essential needs for immigrants who are just stepping foot in America, this program is like a stepping stone. There can be many difficulties adjusting to a new environment. For example, different language, different people, cultural differences, and most importantly a language barrier. The offices of the NAWC are located in areas where the immigrant population is under served. I volunteered at the New Americans Welcome Center in Flushing, Queens. As a volunteer my job was limited but what I did was still important. The NAWC offers free English classes to immigrant every cycle. Depending on the branch and cycle the number of classes varies. My job as a volunteer was to help students with the registration process. Which included a moderate level of paper work which I doubt any immigrant who only knew a few words in English can complete my themselves. The whole process took a

So we started registering for the Winter 2016 cycle and here we are in a room full of about 35 people waiting to register. We were mid way though the day, the next client came up to me was a young woman about 23 to 27. I wanted to get through this having already seen many clients so the process gets thoughtless. Bare in mind asking simple questions like address, telephone number, and marital status takes a pantomime. I asked her for a couple of signatures and at this point I was losing my patience. She took an eternity just to print her name. Her hand was barely able to hold the pen however this lady was all smiles. Every question I asked her she seemed to answer with a gleam. “What is your country of origin?” Afghanistan. “Highest level of education in your country?” “Is my first time going school” she said and
