In J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan and Arthur Ransome’s Swallows and Amazons, the location becomes a vital aspect to the storyline. The use of islands such as Neverland and Wild Cat Island creates a symbolic metaphor for a barrier between the protagonists and mainland society. Nevertheless, the texts maintain unique approaches to display developments amongst their characters. Through the comparison of the Darlings and the Walkers’ adventures on the islands begins through the representation, accessibility and occupation, reinforced class hierarchy, and gender specific experiences on the islands, a psychological metamorphosis extends from the physical separation. Ultimately, islands act as barriers between the protagonists and mainland society in which psychological transformations can occur.…

A hero in today’s society is most often described as someone who is well respected, powerful, and a protector of weaker people than himself. A great example of a timeless hero is Robin Hood, known for stealing from the rich to help and protect the poor. The legend of Robin Hood is very well liked for its elements of bravery and honorability, even though its group of heroes are actually outlaws. In the film, The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), the outlaws follow a very similar code to that of the knights. Specifically, the Merry Men follow the codes of respecting women, protecting the weak, and granting mercy towards enemies.…

Thesis: The boundaries of knowledge and the capacity for humans to know is limited in Paradise Lost both because only God is omniscient and there is no point for Adam to understand more than what Raphael is telling him. The want to know or to gain knowledge is compared to an appetite in Paradise Lost. Milton says, “knowledge is as food and needs no less her temperance over appetite to know, in measure what the mind may well contain, oppresses else with surfeit and soon turns wisdom to folly” (216). Adam continues to question the archangel Raphael because gaining knowledge is like eating food, and humans need food to survive.…

The threat of Captain Hook in many ways seems like more of a game than a real danger. Unlike Harry Potter, the secondary world of Peter Pan is so far in fantasy that there is little to compare to the real world. Barrie uses this extreme to show how shallow this secondary world really is. When the Darling children realize that reality has more comfort and love than Neverland, they wish for home and their mother. The Lost Boys, when presented with the option of real world parents, also wish to grow up and return to the Darling house with Wendy.…
