For clones the idea of working towards their wishes is in actuality a goal that they can only dream of getting there and can't actually achieve it. Giving up on their wishes is what all the clones did, exploring the world around them was restricted and the idea of going out was often covered wp with horrific stories. Kids who wanted to explore the world outside the Hailsham school grounds were faced with the decision of either going out and dying as told as the stories or to choose to suppress their hopes and wishes and stay in in fear. The kids choose to stay in and no lose their life and their purpose in life if anything happened to them outside. Kathy’s wish of being with Tommy was shattered when Ruth made efforts of being with him, Kath chooses to suppress her feeling and gives up the idea of being with Tommy just like any other wish and hopes to keep them as her friends and not taint the friendship that Ruth and her had. They are forced with the decision that only has one option of giving up on their hopes and continue donation and not get something to be with each
