“Never judge a book by its cover”, this age-old proverb has been passed down from generation to generation. In this era of technology and social media, society often finds itself judging people’s lives off of profile pictures, status updates and the short paragraph biography often found on social media. Children and adults post about there daily lives, personal interest daily. Often people connect online through perceived common interest or physical attraction. However the notion that someone’s character can be determined through social media is false. Social media is only a glimpse at someone’s ideas, and lifestyle. People naturally communicate better through different mediums. Some people communicate better through writing then verbally. Others rely on body language to convey their messages, even while talking. Some forms of social media are just text such as Twitter. Other forms such as Instagram are more pictures forward, which may appeal to a different crown of people. If someone is not comfortable or is new to social media their account is not likely to be a good representation of their character. They may not even be able to send the messages they had in mind. Knowing that social media post can be viewed by the world, many choose to keep their personal and controversial conversation offline. Factoring personal communications styles, experience with social media, and the public expose of ideals it is apparent that peoples guided perception of themselves, will not always be accurate online. It is important to have both a means to communicate with people and a channel where people can respond. A person can take time to carefully craft his or her words and carry a strong and influential voice through social …show more content…
Some use social media to catalogue their thoughts. Others use social media to connect with peers and like minded individuals. However all social media users leave an online impression, a catalogue of text and images that can be used to build a preconceived notion about the user. Social media is only a glimpse at someone’s ideas, and lifestyle. The user chooses when to post and what to post, and for this reason social media is a conduit for guided perception. Social media is not a good reference point to judge someone’s character because intentionally or unintentionally they are affected by their personal communication style, professional needs, and the opportunity to create a new personal image. With these driving factors it is easy to see that social media’s productions and perception are heavily influenced from one account to the next.
