Neuroblastoma is a malignant hemorrhagic tumor composted principally of cells resembling neuroblasts that give rise to cells of the sympathetic system. Cancer starts when cells in the body begin growing out of control. Neuroblastoma is a type of cancer that starts in early forms of nerve cells found in an embryo/ fetus. Neuroblastoma is by far the most common cancer in infants less than 1 year old. Neuroblastoma is accountable for about 6 percent of all cancer in young children. The prefix ‘neuro’ refers to the nerves. The nervous system would consist of the brain, nerves, and spinal cord and is responsible for thinking, sensation, movement, etc. Part of the nervous system also controls body functions such as heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, digestion, etc.

Cancer is different among all people who suffer from it, some grow and spread quickly, while others grow slowly. In rare cases neuroblastoma can be detected by an ultrasound even before birth or in some cases of children, the cancer cell will die and go away on its own. About 2 of 3 cases the cancer has already spread to other body parts by the time they have been diagnosed. Some symptoms of neuroblastoma would include pale color, protruding eyes and dark circles, enlarged abdomen, etc. Neuroblastoma can be diagnosed by several tests including blood tests, urine tests, CT scan, ultrasound, bone marrow biopsy, etc. Just like any other cancer, there are 4 stages that can be progressive before diagnosed. Four of the most common types of treatment for Neuroblastoma would be chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, or Immunotherapy. There are also many side effects of these treatments that include hair loss, the outlook on a patient with Neuroblastoma would be based on the stage and risk level of the cancer.
