Since my first year in high school, I have wanted to be a Psychologist. I've set a high standard for myself and plan to pursue this goal at American University. Part of my passion to become a Psychologist is the result my early childhood experience in preschool. Attending preschool was a traumatic experience. On several occasions my teacher yelled at me for helping other students struggling to complete their work. Other times she yelled at for asking to organize the books or assist her in any way. Unfortunately, she scolded me and told me to go back to my seat. Additionally, the teacher accused me for being defiant because. she thought I intentionally spelled my name wrong. Finally, my mom inquired about the numerous complaints and realized that my teacher labeled me with a behavioral disorder without an expert opinion. The teacher simply did not know how to handle a high achieving, gifted student.

Even though my mother withdrew me from this school, at times felt unintelligent and disobedient.

Ultimately, I wish to pursue my PhD and become a Neuroscientist. Achieving my bachelor's degree in Psychology is my first step towards my ultimate doctorate degree and become a change agent for my generation. In the summer of 2015, I attended the National Student Leadership Conference (NSLC), in Washington, DC. Students resided on the campus of American University. I was able to explore the Psychology & Neuroscience Program. This program was a 10-day intensive leadership program, here I explored the world of neurobiology. This introduction helped me to solidify my desire to pursue Neuroscience/Psychology. Upon my return home; American University was and still is my first choice of schools I wish to attend. I offer the caliber of leadership, dedication and passion American University is looking for and I would be honored to represent this school as a future

I went from an exceptional student to one who talks back. Since freshman year Mrs. R had been my favorite teacher, even though I did not have her until I was a junior. She was kind and always there if you needed to take a breather in her class, or simply do whatever you needed to on the computer, if it was your lunch. I've heard students complain about how they did not like her and how annoying she was. However, I couldn't understand why they felt that way about Mrs. R. I never saw her the way they did.…

The way the brain functions is thru "neurons that connect many cells at once and release neurotransmitters to a network of other neurons"(Gage, 2004). The constant transmission of information creates memories and thoughts. The brain has the process to reconstruct itself by a process called neurological plasticity which allows new cells production in the brain consequently creating a learning mechanism. Neuroplasticity refers to changes in the neural circuitry at the level of synaptic transmission, and is the mechanism underlying learning, memory and behavioural response modification1,2. These changes are induced rapidly by stress in certain brain regions such as the neocortex3, the hippocampus4 and the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus1. Being part of the stress-coping mechanism, neuroplasticity contributes to stress-induced behaviour and neuroendocrine adaptation1,5. Study has shown that in humans, a lack of such response during chronic exposure to psychological stress may be related to the development of stress-related disorders6. Research has focused extensively on the neocortex and the hippocampus, however, only Bains…
