How have different neuroscientific techniques added to our understanding of how the brain works?
Many different Neuroscientific techniques have been used and developed throughout the years in order to successfully identify and study an individual’s brain function, thus indicating how these techniques help to understand how the brain works, some of these techniques include: Positron Emission Tomography (PET), Computed Tomographic (CT), Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), Magnetoencephalography (MEG). This essay will discuss techniques in detail, in order to attempt to determine how much certain neuroscientific techniques have contributed to the understanding of brain function in individuals with both normal brains and brain damage.

The PET scan provides detailed images of the surface and below the surface of the brain (Coon & Mitterer, 2011) a PET scan shows which areas of the brain are using more energy, this is because the brain runs on glucose, it shows this by recognising positrons (sobatomic particles) which is admitted by weakly radioactive glucose (sugar) PET scans show that different brain areas are active when speaking, seeing, hearing or thinking takes place (Coon, Mitterer, 2011). CHANGE!! In order to perform this process, the individual is required to inhale none-toxic radioactive glucose (Bernardo J. Carducci Date?), this substance is then taken in and used by the brain cells. When an individual is undergoing a PET scan, the rate of brain activity is visualised and an image of the brain activity is produced, this might indicate that an aggressive individual may show different results during the PET scan, such as a lower activity in the part of the brain that is associated with reasoning.
