A neuroendocrine tumor is formed when healthy cells in the endocrine system change and grow rapidly. They form a mass that then turns into a tumor which can be benign or cancerous. If the mass is benign then it can grow but it will not spread whereas a cancerous tumor will grow and spread throughout the body. Neuroendocrine tumors were first discovered by Thomas Langhans in 1876 during an autopsy of a fifty year old woman. He found a tumor rich in glandular tissue with a thick fibrous stroma. However, Siegfried Oberndorfer was the first to note the tumors as lesions in the gut in 1907.
