Neuro Linker: Video Game Analysis

As for AW people use a device called a Neuro Linker, a small device that hangs on the neck near the collar. This device connects directly to user’s brain, and is as common as a cell phone is now. The systems send sensory input to the brain causing them to see, hear, and in some cases feel what is happening. What the show opens, it shows a classroom of students using the system to view what the teacher is writing on the board as well as take notes (Kawahara, Accel World). This is similar to what Hallow Lens and Google Glass is trying to achieve but without having hardware in front of your eyes. AW explains the system as a quantum connection, allowing the view to draw the conclusion that the connection is achieved with an extracortical interface. The show reinforces this conclusion with a statement near the end of the series that intracortical chips are illegal (Kawahara, Accel World). A function of the Neuro Linker that is pivotal to the main characters of the show is the ability to “accelerate your brain waves by a thousand percent. Making one second feel like a thousand or 16 minutes and 40 seconds” (Kawahara, Accel World).

But think about what we could do once we do crack this code. Imagine if no family had to feel helpless watching a loved one disappear behind the mask of Parkinson’s or struggle in the grip of epilepsy. Imagine if we could reverse traumatic brain injury or PTSD for our veterans who are coming home. Imagine if someone with a prosthetic limb can now play the piano or throw a baseball as well as anybody else, because the wiring from the brain to that prosthetic is direct and triggered by what's already happening in the patient's mind. What if computers could respond to our thoughts or our language barriers could come tumbling down. Or if millions of Americans were suddenly finding new jobs in these fields -- jobs we haven’t even dreamt up yet -- because we chose to invest in this project”

When you receive NFB, it’s as simple as watching a DVD. When your brainwaves correspond with the pre-determined brain pattern, you continue watching the program. If the brainwaves start to deviate from the desired pattern, the computer immediately detects this and alters the DVD, making the picture go from color to black and white. These changes in the picture are the feedback. Your brain wants to watch the show in color, and learns what the brain waves where doing to produce the color.…
