If one has not heard already, some colleges make their decisions to accept someone or not based on their social – networking profile. “In a 2008 survey of 320 admissions officers from top colleges, the education experts at Kaplan learned that roughly 10% visit social networking sites such as Facebook and Myspace to learn more about the applicants” (Grove). Even though the numbers don’t appear to be big, 10% is a huge number considering the amount of colleges and universities there are in the country. The scary fact is that, students have no way of knowing whether or not the college they are applying to will view their profile. They will say that they clicked the “customize settings” tab, and selected the networks and the people who can view their pictures and videos that they may be tagged in, and selected the people who can post on their wall (Baig). Yes, Facebook users can do this and it helps but privacy settings only limit what people can see. Users can prevent people from posting on their wall, but they still have the ability to view their posts. This means that businesses, colleges and the public can still read what a user may have on their wall. Social – networking sites are great, but users need to consider if the comments and photos they are about to post are appropriate for their profile. Remember, what users post on Facebook becomes property of Facebook and they can then do whatever they like with it. If one is uncertain about the appropriateness of a comment or photo then it is best to not share it with Facebook or Myspace. In order to limit the amount of people being fired from their jobs, or the amount of students not being accepted into college because of their social – networking profiles, people need to take a minute to think before they go on and post a photo or a comment. If people chose to post something inappropriate, they better not think that they are safe because of the privacy settings they have set. The answer is simple; don’t post anything that is found
