Netflix Analytical Essay

Decent Essays
When thinking about what interests me Netflix’s is the first thing that comes to my mind, so when having to apply analytics to a real-world business I thought this would be great for me to look into. Netflix’s was first created for online movie rentals in 1997 by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph but it has grown into the biggest internet television network in over 190 countries. This success can be linked to business analytics because it provides their media center insight into the viewer habits in what they like to watch and it gives recommendations into other things the view might be interested in watching. Netflix provides members with access to TV shows, movies, documentaries, and even original series on an anytime and anywhere basis.

This algorithm tracks and groups people based on movies that they have similarly rated in the past and makes movie recommendations based upon those who have liked the same movies as you.…

As companies started to acknowledge the value of customer data and how that data can be used to increase profits, many companies were willing to go a little further than others in acquiring that data. An example of one of these companies is the department store Nordstrom. Back in 2013, Nordstrom enlisted the aid of analytics company Euclid to assist in acquiring information on customers that could help improve insights on how shoppers spent their time in the store. At the time, Nordstrom was among 100 Euclid customers that the New York Times reported had already tracked about 50 million devices in 4,000 locations (Cohan 2013). Nordstrom with assistance from Euclid was operating a pilot program in the Dallas-Fort Worth area for a special technology that would track shoppers’ in-store foot traffic via cell phone signals (Hinshaw 2013).…
