Nessa Carey The Epigenetic Revolution

The Epigenetics Revolution: How Modern Biology Is Rewriting Our Understanding of Genetics, Disease, and Inheritance, written by Nessa Carey, is a uniquely constructed introduction to the world of epigenetics. Regardless of its recent emergence in science, Carey articulately ties in both historical context and scientific evidence to outline and support the developing knowledge of epigenetics. She uses scientific studies, advances, and even possible future developments of the field to engage and inform the reader.
Although unbelievably interesting, the book is considerably dense, which yields its own benefits and disadvantages. As a student, this book has given me a considerable amount of information on a subject I had never approached. Along

Epigenetics are responsible for the “ghost” of the genome, enabling organisms identical by genotype to differ significantly in phenotype. It is referred to as a ghost because it was previously undetectable, and therefore mysterious. One important experiment to epigenetics involved a gene in mice that tell their body when to stop eating. In a mouse that is yellow and fat, the gene is turned off by the epigenome, whereas in a brown skinny mouse the gene is turned on. Interestingly, when the fat mouse was only allowed to eat extremely nutritional food, it bore only pups with the gene turned on.…

Methylation explains how one identical twin gets cancer yet the other does not because it explains how the same set of genes can produce different results depending on which genes have or have not undergone methylation. This occurs because genetic instructions are not unchangeable as we thought, but instead the DNA can remain the same while some genes are switched on or off. 33. We think that epigenetics can allow a grandmother to influence her grandchild’s DNA because we know that environmental factors and factors from the mother come into play when the baby is developing inside the mother. But for females, they are born with a full set of eggs that she will have for life.…

By studying the interactions between biological systems and its in environment, one can begin to understand why changes - be it on the molecular level or an entire population’s level - occur and the important role it takes in survival. This idea can be seen in Sharon Moalem’s book, Inheritance: How Our Genes Change Our Lives and Our Lives Change Our Genes, when he touches on the study of epigenetics. Epigenetics relates to the fourth big idea in how it expands on its underlying statement of essential knowledge 4.C.2, which states that “Environmental factors influence the expression of the genotype in an organism” (The College Board, 2015). Defined in the book as the study of how certain factors can alter gene expression in one generation and sometimes pass on these alterations, Moalem addresses epigenetics through his existing medical knowledge and various conducted studies (Moalem, 2014).…

Interplay between genetics and environment is necessary for an adequate explanation of traits and individuals and their interactions are not necessarily linear and one-directional. Epigenetic inheritance has shown that phenotypic behaviors and the environment are involved in gene expression and regulation, yet evolutionary psychology has done little to update its theoretical foundations in light of this (Racine, 2013, p. 144; Rosenberg, 2006, p.559). Therefore, attempts to integrate development into an evolutionary framework must theoretically accommodate bidirectional influences, while also practically answer epigenetic…

DNA is our genetic code, it is permanent and unchangeable. Epigenetics are the mechanisms that influence DNA, it is the device that inhibits or increases our gene expression. Epigenetics can be influenced by many factors, for example nutrition and stress. Although the actual makeup of our genetic code isn’t changed by these factors, the extent to which the genes are expressed can be (Rettner, 2013). Epigeneticist Moshe Szyf highlighted the ways in which different behaviors can influence genetics in his TedTalk, How Early Life Experience is Written into DNA.…

Standing alone in a case in the middle of an upper level gallery room, one will find a humbly sized diptych, which vibrantly grabs the attention of anyone who passes it. To a knowing viewer, it becomes almost immediately evident that this is the work of none other than Jan van Eyck himself. This piece juxtaposes two biblical scenes commonly depicted by Renaissance artists, but with a Netherlandish attention to detail, as well as other formal elements endemic to van Eyck’s style. These components include an emphasis on highly saturated colors, a strong use of spatial elements, and highly realistic physical renderings of the subjects depicted.…

Simone Francis Reference number: 2167-6527 Epigenetics is the study of modifications to the genes of organisms. The way in which our genes behave can be altered by our epigenomes without changing our DNA sequence. They can be altered by different factors of our environment such as what we eat, drink, etc. The video on epigenetics was very informative. Prior to watching the video, I had no knowledge of what epigenetics was nor have I ever heard about it.…
