Before transferring to Rockhurst I attended Johnson County Community College for two years but never actually went into the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art that is located on campus. One of my favorite pieces in the exhibition was Sean Lyman’s graphite drawing titled “Coming and Going.” I have always liked the look of graphite and how all the different shades of black really bring an image together. In Lyman’s work the open doors are a lighter shade of gray compared to the closed doors, which I think really draws your eye to the middle of the drawing where there is an open door that could lead to anywhere. I enjoyed thinking about the possibilities of where that open door could lead to in Lyman’s drawing and I think that’s part of what he wanted viewers to get out of his drawing. Another piece that I enjoyed in the exhibit was Matt Bollinger’s work “Storage.” I thought the way that he used acrylic paint and collage, really went well together. So well, that it was hard to differentiate where he used the acrylic and where he added items. One of the pieces that I didn’t care for was Thomas Kiefer’s print “Satisfies!” The print was a picture of several different types and sizes of Snickers. To me the print didn’t really seem like art and appeared to just be a snapshot that anybody could take. I do however think that the way in which he arranged the Snickers kind of in a geometric way is very appealing to the eye and catches your attention.
