Neorealism In The Battle Of Algiers

Third cinema is heavily influenced by Neorealism, and in the film Battle of Algiers it is very present. The opening of the movie for example when the man is forced to wear the military uniform and expose the man in the wall and his family in hiding , lays out a narrative of a current conflict with the militia and the citizens of the town. Which is an example of both third cinema and neorealism, because one of the traits of both is that there is some type of political or social issue occurring which is shown in that seen.

Another trait of the movie that was shown towards the ending of the movie was the news reel aesthetic. In the last scene of the movie when the mass war broke out we get this feel that we are watching a news reel, because we hear a commentator in the background on what sounds like a radio playing speaking in French telling what is going on. This scene is unique to third cinema, because not only is it influenced by neorealism but also by soviet montage. The ending of the movie also shares the characteristics with neorealism, because of the open ending. The movie does not end with a definite conclusion instead it ends with a scene of the battle heightening in intensity between the two groups so we are left that notion. Lastly a last a trait that was influenced by neorealism is the use of non-professional actors in order to preserve the realism of the film and throughout the movie we can see that these actions are natural instead of forced and see the natural demonstrations throughout. Third cinema does a good job with incorporating its influences from other movie styles, but also preserving and forming a style of its
