The practice of medicine and methods of healing for diseases and illnesses dates back to ancient times. The Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans all practiced medicine according to their set beliefs of myths and legends in their respective cultures. In Medieval times, sicknesses and diseases were thought to be effects of evil spirits having entered the body. The world of medicine has progressed vastly from these ideals. The specialty in newborn care began to be emphasized in early 20th century. However, there was little a physician could do for infants other than keep them warm, encourage breast-feeding, and isolate them from strangers to reduce the transmission of pathogens.
